Mother Teresa- A Brief Biography:

Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, Macedonia and there is some controversy regarding her date of birth, although 26 August, 1910, is generally accepted as the date. (Named Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, this Albanian went on to take an Indian citizenship later on in life.) She must have been around 12 when she felt Jesus calling her to become a missionary. By 18 she had joined the Sisters of Loreto, a group of Irish nuns who also worked in India. On May 24, 1931, she officially became a nun after 2 years of training.

She taught at a school in the beginning but she felt deep emotions for the poor and the suffering she saw all around her.She got permission from her superiors and started working in slums of Calcutta, India. She had no financial backing, just her faith and a mission. She started work for slum children by setting up an open-air school.  Gradually she started getting financial backing and others who felt for the cause joined her as volunteers. There was hope.

On October 7, 1950 she got permission to start “The Missionaries of Charity” order. It became International Religious Family in 1965 by the Pope’s decree. It soon spread its wings and started spreading goodwill all over the world, working for the needy. Mother inspired all to work for people regardless of whether they were lepers or had AIDS, were good or evil, believed in the words of Christ or not…their mission was to help humanity.

Mother Teresa got Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971), Nehru Prize(1972), The Balzan Prize (1979), Magsasay award, Templeton award, The Nobel Peace Prize (1979) and many other honors, awards and prizes. But she still worked for her mission and all her popularity was used to propagate the cause of the destitute. She worked for the poor till she finally passed away in 1997. She was beatified in October 2003 by Pope John Paul II and is now called Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

Her contributions were nothing short of a miracle for those she served.

But no words can do justice to this great human being. Here are a few quotes ofe Mother Teresa’s. Mother Teresa’s quotes speak of her love and compassion, an ability to see her lord, Christ ,in everybody.

  1. Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.
  2. Each one of them is Jesus in disguise.
  3. God doesn’t require us to succeed; he only requires that you try.
  4. I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.
  5. If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
  6. If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.
  7. Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.
  8. It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.
  9. Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.
  10. Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God – the rest will be given.
