Natalie Wood, my Icon.
When I was a teenager growing up, Natalie Wood fascinated me. I loved her beauty, and elfin like, little girl quality, which reminded me of Audrey Hepburn. I watched her dancing in West side story, the musical about rival gangs, and was totally captivated by her screen presence, and the charisma that exuded from her.
I saw her in dramatic roles like East of Eden, playing a troubled teenager opposite the late James Dean, she had the power to both move and enthrall me, so I was not surprised to learn later that she had been acting since a young child, as she seemed to be so at home in front of the camera.
She was the daughter of Russian immigrant parents, from a poor background, so it was not surprising that her mother pushed her daughter so hard to become a star. She appeared in films from about the age of five, playing alongside Hollywood many Hollywood greats such as, James Stewart, Bette Davis, and Bing Crosby.
I followed her career with great interest, and was thrilled when she married the very handsome Robert Wagner, and they seemed to be the perfect couple. I was similarly heartbroken when they split up, as in my mind, they were a golden couple. But it seemed they couldn’t live without each other after all, as a few years later, they remarried, much to my delight.
Natalie made many films, and proved herself to be amongst the most talented actresses there has ever been. Sadly she died in a boating accident at only 43 years of age, such a short life, and although she died in 1983, I still hold the memory of her vivacious personality in my heart. She was filming what was to be her last film, at that time, Brainstorm, which was released posthumously.
Natalie Wood was my icon, and her beauty and talent was very special, and she is totally irreplaceable.
