Pen Pals Ii
A story about a couple of real pen pals from many years ago.
Pen Pals II
The brief article I wrote about the pre-Internet practice of writing to pen pals reminded me of a story I heard on NPR several years ago. They were talking with a woman who had several pen pals when she was young. She told of one young girl (about 12 years old, the same age as the speaker when they corresponded) she exchanged letters with who really impressed her. This girl was emphatic in her aspiration to be an actress and perform in musicals. The woman on the radio was amazed. She was just beginning to think about makeup and dances and the sort of things 12-year-old girls look forward to. And here was this other girl, the same age, who was certain about what she wanted to do with her life. It worked out, too.
Remember The Rocky Horror Picture Show? Do you recall the tap dancer who sang about her boyfriend who had the devil’s eyes and a pickup truck?
She was this woman’s pen pal when they were young.
