Percy Sutton, Harlem Politician and Radio Mogul Dies at 89

Percy Sutton, one of the first pioneers in media, and attorney of Malcolm X died at the age of 89 New York.

Initially born as son of a slave, Percy Sutton did his military service with the Tuskegee Airmen in the second world war and lived most of his life in Harlem.

Already in the 70ies, he built a business and showed an entrepreneurial spirit in the budding radio-industry. Purchasing WLIB-AM together with his brother, their station became one of the first owned and administrated by Afro-Americans. Sutton’s Inner City Broadcasting Corporation also included many more stations all over the nation.

In addition to his involvement of the radio industry, he also had significant impact on the The Amsterdam News, which was the second largest black newspaper in the US. 

Percy Sutton also got elected into political office in New York, showing a dedication and commitment especially to Harlem’s culture, proving it without doubt, when he bought the Apollo Theater for $25,000.
