Playboy and John Mayor Racist? Say It Isn’t So!
I can’t believe John Mayor said this.
I first heard about John mayor’s Playboy interview a week ago and it’s taken me that long to process. Basically he said that his penis is a white supremacist, and he compared Jessica Simpson to crack cocaine, saying he’d pay millions to snort her. Even though I don’t have the exact verbatim interview, I’m annoyed that yet another celebrity has revealed their true colors (white) apparently.
I was actually a huge fan of John Mayor and some of my favorite memories are listening to “Bigger than My Body” and singing along with my mom. Both my mom, who is white and my dad, who is black love John Mayor for his instrumental prowess and the uniqueness of his songs. I recently even discovered the duet he did with Herbie Hancock (Stitched Up) and added it to my mp3 player.
Now I realize that nobody can control their sexual preferences. If he likes white only, that’s a valid choice. I’m only angered that he felt the need to publicly declare this in Playboy magazine, a magazine which represents sex to the majority of American men .
A lot of minority women already have self esteem issues based on hundreds of years worth of being devalued in the media. The idea that non-white women are subconsciously perceived as less female than whites, especially in America, continues to be debated within today’s academic discourses. As a biracial women, I feel hurt by this interview. John Mayor is just reinforcing these negative perceptions about minority women and lowering my stock as a woman.

You know I really would care less what he thinks. It is his choice and just like him I probably would not touch a white American male. I am sorry for you because you are caught between two cultures.

Don’t base too much of your self esteem on what some celebrity says. If you do you will always have self esteem issues. Celebrities are good for only one thing: entertainment. Enjoy your entertainers. Then forget about them.
