Richard Gutierrez, Philippine Cinema Super Idol

The son of Eddie Gutierrez, a former actor and also a heartthrob who was allegedly linked to some of the rich and glamorous women in his heyday, Richard is probably today’s most popular Philippine movie idol.  Girls—and boys not afraid of showing their effeminacy—shiver in their breasts whenever there’s a launching of his latest films, his leading ladies like KC Concepcion clinging to him like snaky vines.

Okay, a pretty smiling face, very popular but what about talent?  I don’t know if he has it.  But he’s got many awards that prove his acting ability.  The first impression one gets, though, is that he is only all looks, all smiles, trying hard to look cute, and no talent.  But as you get used to seeing him regularly on TV, you must admit that looks, never mind the talent, is a big factor.  After all that’s what the audience wants.  I see no signs of letting up on part of showbiz producers searching for pretty faces if only to please the viewers who don’t give a damn about talent.
