Right Brain, Left Brain, Which Brain is Your Brain?

A brief description of left and right brain characteristics.

The brain is by far the most fascinating organ in my opinion. Since it has intrigued me for so long, I have always absorbed knowledge of this amazing organ. It is the powerhouse of the body, controlling both voluntary and involuntary actions. As many of us are aware, the brain is divided into two halves, logically referred to as the right brain and the left brain. Interestingly, the left brain controls the right side of the body and the right brain controls the left side. That means that if you are right-handed, then you are primarily left-brained; but if you are left-handed, then you are right-brained. Each half of the brain has its own unique characteristics or actions that it is responsible for.

The left brain is more logical and analytical. It controls our verbal abilities to describe and define things. The left brain also allows us to organize and analyze information in a step-by-step manner, or sequentially. In short, the left brain is logical and rational. It helps our bodies keeps track of time, analyze and understand our world, interpret symbols and facts, and makes sense of numbers and problems.

The right brain, by contrast, is not rational; it is more intuitive. Our creative processes can be attributed to the right brain functions. The right brain processes data without a sense of time, words, or structure. It focuses on things that are felt and seen. It does not rationally reason about things, but rather observations are seen spatially as a part of a whole or insightfully. Basically, the right brain does not require facts and logic to function, it focuses primarily on feelings and our primal awareness.

Based on these descriptions of the right and left brain processes, do you see any of these things reflected in your personality? We can be right-brained or left brained; some people use equal amounts of each side, especially if they are ambidextrous. Personally, I can see how my left brain has a stronger presence in my day to day functions, although I can also observe many right brain characteristics as well. What about you?

I tend to be mostly left brained although I’d be lying if I said there weren’t moments of me being right brained.

I am the same way, I think my left brain is primarily responsible for the majority of my thoughts and actions, although I do have that creative “right-brained spark.” I seem to go through phases of rational behavior followed by spurts of more intuitive, creative behavior.

My husband is more right-brained as well. I think that is part of the reason we get along so well, he is intuitive and insightful, but my logic and reasoning allow us to really mesh well together.

I would love to learn more about psychology! The brain and how it affects our behavior is very fascinating.

Well, people say I’m right-brained oriented because I tend to day-dream a lot and also a lot of times people say I lack common sense.
