Robert Culp – a Life

I grew up with Robert Culp on the television and loved watching his characters.

My first introduction to Robert Culp was through several episodes of Columbo, each character he portrayed was different despite ‘Columbo’ murderers being of a set type. I think out of all the special guest murderers on Columbo Culp brought something modern and realistic to the seventies series. The four episodes he appeared in were; Death Lends a Hand (1971), The Most Crucial Game (1972), Double Exposure (1973) and Columbo goes to College (1990). My favourite episode has to be Double Exposure because Columbo catches Culp’s murderer by using his own technique against him. Robert Culp plays this part brilliantly, especially when he realises he was caught by his own method.

Robert Culp’s career spans more than 40 years in television and film, just look at his IMDb listing! The volume of work is astounding, added to this his contribution to cinema and television is not only in acting, but script writing, directing and as interviewee on countless shows and documentaries.

He was best known for his lead in I Spy which I haven’t seen, so can’t comment. The series, in which he played a secret agent with Bill Cosby, ran from 1965 to 1968. Culp won a Golden Globe, but didn’t manage to achieve the Emmy Award despite being nominated several times. However, his achievements have taken a lifetime and the volume of news announcing his death shows the impact he has had on several generations of television viewers.

I will always remember Robert Culp as suave, handsome and a wonderful actor who made those Columbo episodes he starred in his own!

I really liked your article about Robert Culp. It’s a shame that he passed away like that. My thoughts go out to his family. I watched him on an episode of The Cosby Show and I saw him on Everybody Loves Raymond.

Robert Culp is one of my favorite actors, I’m sad to hear his passing. One of his outstanding performances can be seen especially in “Demon with a Glass Hand”, an early episode of Outer Limits from the 1960’s before he made “I Spy”. Catch him in the funny film ” Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice” from 1969. A very good actor indeed with a long career. Thanks for sharing. Good article!
