Robert Pattinson Dead? Get a Life

Internet death hoaxes are the new black.

It seems you are nobody these days unless there has been an online hoax about your death.

Some are better at being undead than others. Take Robert Pattinson who remains resolutely of this world after being the subject of two popular internet hoaxes and making vampires cool again in the hit movie, Twilight.

Others who have had the ‘honor’ of seeing their own death notices fly across the world include Lou Reed,  Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Oprah Winfrey and many others.

These online pranks are so prevalent that when a celebrity actually does die the media scrabble for confirmation, afraid to be the first to print the news definitively in case it is yet another hoax. Even on the very day that Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett both shuffled off this mortal coil, the pranksters were at it again. This time it was Jeff Goldblum who had fallen off a cliff in New Zealand – a common fake death scenario. Amusingly, Goldblum himself broke the news of his death to his many fans on The Colbert Report, summarising with the touching words, “I will be missed.”

Why are people so eager for people to die? Although it’s my opinion these things are done by agents to get the celebs more publicity. Seems to work. Great article.

I agree with beldobie they do it to get attention just like the naked picture of Vanessa Hudgens right before each movie she comes out in… I liked your article well written.

The horrifying circus that always surrounds a celeb’s real death is the worst. They’ll be picking over MJ’s bones for decades.
