Stealing – It’s a Celebrity Thing!
A high profile TV chef in the UK has just been arrested after stealing cheese and wine from a supermarket. Celebrities like Winona Ryder have also been arrested and found guilty of shoplifting. They can afford to pay, so why do it?
UK celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson has a relaxed, easy manner in front of the cameras. He’s a natural, and why not? His godfather was Richard Burton. But his performance at a local supermarket has dented his image and could end his TV career.
In the US actress Winona Ryder was accused of stealing more than $5000 worth of designer clothes. Paparazzi took to waiting outside stores to see if they could catch her in an embarrassing moment. Actress Shelley Morrison from Will & Grace has been before the courts, and so has tennis star Jennifer Capriati who stole some costume jewellery.
The standard explanation seems to be that it’s a cry for help, Celebrities who appear to have the ability to arrange their lives and circumstances perfectly – are sometimes simply putting on a show.
They know something is going wrong but they can’t bring themselves to do what is necessary.
Being caught out by the law and exposed by the media gives them the excuse they need to get help.
The first thing Worrall Thompson said in his statement after he was caught was that he would enrol for treatment and – get the help he so obviously needed.
He could have done that before – but he needed the excuse. He wasn’t happy but could not confront his problems which may well have started when he was sent from home to a live-in school when he was only 3.
That emotional deprivation has finally taken its toll now that he is 60. It has been made worse by financial setbacks caused by the credit crunch. He was forced to put his chain of six restaurants, pubs and cafes into administration when his bank refused to extend credit.
Worrall Thompson used his own funds to keep two restaurants, in Windsor and Kew, open. These are high end ventures in up market areas and probably well suited to the Worrall Thompson brand of chic snobbery and food with flair.
Other famous light fingered celebs include Dean Martin who said when he went round to Bing Crosby’s house he always stole a couple of ties.
Deano didn’t need the ties and no way was he stressed. He just did it for a laugh!
