On Tuesday, 18th September, 2012, the football world bid farewell to a legend, president of NFL films: Stephen Douglas Sabol(Steve Sabol)
Producer, director, writer, and camera man, Steve Sabol was the president of NFL films, an idea that was initiated by his father, Ed. Ed may have conceived the idea, but it was Steve who took it forward, and made it famous for what it is today!
Within a few years of it’s conception, NFL propelled pro-football from it’s fourth place among America’s most popular sport after boxing, college football, and baseball(in ascending order), to number one position. All thanks to the creative genius of Steve Sabol.
NFL was founded in 1962 by Ed Sabol, 96 and still surviving. Post graduation in 1964, Steve joined in his father’s business, as cinematographer. He later took on NFL Films as President. During his time with NFL Films, Steve won more than 35 emmy’s(the only person to win so many!), and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.
Two days ago, on Tuesday, 18th September, 2012, Steve died of brain cancer. He was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor in the brain in March, last year. He was 69.
