Terrance Stanley Fox
A short legacy to terry fox.
Terrance Stanley Fox was born to Rolly and Betty Fox on July 28 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and raised in Port coqtlan(a small city on the west cost). During Terry’s childhood he played a lot of sports, he liked sports so much that he wanted to play guard in the NBA or be a physical education teacher. He did do track and field even though he didn’t enjoy it. When Terry was a teenager, he got in a car accident but luckily only walked out with a sore knee.In 1977 Terry felt a pain in his right knee also known as the knee in the car accident. He found out he Osteoporosis, a rare cancer found usually in men 10-15 years old. Terry believed that his car injury made his knee more susceptible to cancer even though his doctor disagrees, but no one knows the real cause of his cancer still to this very day. Later on in 1977 Terry had his leg amputated and received his prosthetic leg. After Terry had gotten used to his new leg, he started to think of ways to raise money for cancer research. He decided to run across Canada but first he had to write a letter to several companies to get the right supplies. On October 15 1979 Terry started “the marathon of hope”. His goal was to raise one dollar per every Canadian. At the starting line of the marathon he dipped his leg in the Atlantic ocean and at the end of the marathon he would dip his leg in the Pacific ocean. Sadly he was incapable of doing this. After a long 143 days (5,373km) he was forced to stop North of Thunder Bay Ontario, because his cancer had spread to his lungs. He had intended to continue his marathon after chemo therapy but he had fallen into a coma and died on June 28 1981 at the age of 21. Thanks to all his efforts he had reached his goal of raising one dollar per every Canadian and people all over the world participate in the “Terry Fox marathon of hope” every September!
