The Erin Andrews Peephole Video and Moral Decay

Recently a criminal took illegal, voyeuristic video footage of Erin Andrews, a popular national sportscaster. Then this illegally obtained footage was run by every major news network and became the most popular search on Google. This is a glaring recent example of the fact that we have lost our moral compass.

Someone close to ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews illegally videotaped Andrews while she disrobed and changed clothing in her hotel room. Word of the existence of the videotape was first mentioned on internet Blogs, then the footage surfaced on-line, and then, in an absolutely mind-boggling maneuver, was run on the major news networks. The networks showed abbreviated footage with portions blurred out.

This is absolutely reprehensible. Then, to make matters worse, the media attention and the public’s fascination with titillation propelled the search “Erin Andrews Peephole Video” to number one on the popular Google search engine.

This is an illegally manufactured and obtained videotape. It is the same thing as a sexual assault on Erin Andrews, and anyone who intentionally seeks out and views this footage is guilty of that sexual assault. The networks who ran this footage, obviously to titillate their viewers, are also complicit in this assault on Ms. Andrews.

This is not the same as a celebrity sex tabe, wherein the participants have willingly created the video footage in question – and there are dubious moral implications involved with viewing those tapes assuming that all participants did not necessarily want the footage leaked. This is a criminal, a pervert and a creep, who used technology to transmit their own sick fetish and share it with the world – and apparently the world has decided to join right in, cast morality aside, and give in to the temptation of seeing a beautiful naked woman who did not necessarily want to be seen in that state of being.

Gross – I am by no means a moral prurient, but this is crminal – it is rape, it is assault, it is voyeurism and perversion. Fundamentally this is someone being forced to participate in a sex act without their complicity.

Shame on the networks for airing this footage, albeit blurred, and shame on the general public for forgetting their morality and empathy and rushing in for the latest cheap thrill.
