TIGER WOODS – ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

The nation is still in deep shock and surprise at the discovery of Golf legend Tiger Woods admitted infidelity.  It seems that once again we have been let down by one whom we thought to be beyond reproach.  A perfect role model he was called.  Now since his fall from grace several weeks ago, he is still being persecuted by the media and those who placed him on that high petal to begin with.

Why is it we look to celebrities to be what we ourselves cannot be?  Somehow, somewhere along the way we forgot that Tiger was just a simple human being.  Imperfect and capable of making mistakes just like the rest of us.  Why do we think that just because he became a famous celebrity that he must now become a role model for our children?  I thought parents were supposed to be the role model in their children’s lives.  Instead we say to our children, don’t you want to grow up and be just like Tiger Woods?

I think the thing that intrigues me the most is the fact that the public thinks he should come out and publicly apologize to everyone for not being perfect.  John Daly, a fellow golfer, suggested that Woods should go on Oprah Winfrey and just bare all. Tell the truth and just get it all out there.  It appears he needs some kind of public forgiveness in order to move on and put it all behind him.  Whatever happened to “let he who is without sin cast the first stone” or simply don’t throw stones if you yourself live in a glass house.

It would be foolish to think that some kind of fallout would not be expected, he has lost sponsorship deals and marketing programs costing him the loss of millions.  On last report, there was a hint of possible performance enhancement drug use (since one of his doctors is reportedly under investigation).  What next?  We place high moral standards on our celebrities and high profile public figures but should we?  I mean it seems we have been let down over and over again by doing this.

I dont know if I quite agree with you. Its naive and foolish to think that celebrities like Tiger Woods are no different than you and me. First of all, he is a household name and a world wide icon. His fame alone separates him from 95% of the population and his money separates him from most of the rest. then there is his appearance; tiger is no slouch, he’s a good looking guy in great physical shape. He faces the pressure of maintaining his #1 rank in golf and the pressure of having every shot he takes on the course scrutinized by every weekend warrior on the planet. Tiger has one bad round in one tournament and every golf analyst in the country is saying he’s lost his focus. On top of all that Tiger, I’m sure, has women from every city in almost every continent throwing themselves at him. so Tiger’s case to eventually succomb to the vanities of the world were inevitable just like so many other celebs including the ones you mentioned in your piece. I myself am indifferent to his situation; its not affecting me so why should I be angry at what he did?
Here is why I think the media and the people are out for his blood. reason 1: children. whether he likes it or not Tiger is a role model for kids all over the world. Once they see this kids start to glamorize it and talk about how they wish they could do what he did, trust me I’ve heard them talk. By coming out and publicly apologizing for his actions Tiger might be able to get through to one kid and prevent him from doing something similar. 2. advertisments-Tiger has been paid hundreds of millions of dollars by companies to hock their products based on his squeaky clean image. the loss of sponsorship doesnt put a dent in Tiger’s wallet but it sure does in all the shareholders who hold stock in the companies that dropped him, that’s personal now. the last reason people justifiably upset is the sheer number of women he had relations with. one is a mistake, two, three different girls is a shameful mistake; but 15 women? come on man, thats a serious problem no matter what you believe.
Finally, I agree with you that we shouldn’t be surprised when anyone in the media comes out and does something terrible because it happens all the time; but just because we expect it we certainly shouldn’t condone it and that’s the danger of having a blase attitude when it comes to these matters.

I will pass one thing on about Tiger- I came across a fantastic t shirt at http://www.relevanttees.com that you should check out if you want a good laugh.
