The Passing of Gerry Rafferty

Gerry Rafferty lived a life that was forged out of violence and abuse at the hands of his alcoholic father. By all accounts, his mother cared for him, and did what she could to protect her son.

Although his physical suffering ended with the death of his father when Gerry was 16 years old, his formative years were dominated by all of the horrendous and negative influences of a violent alcoholic. Gerry’s life ended from illness that came from his own alcoholism. In so many cases, where a violent, alcoholic father wields his abusive influence on his family, the recipients of the abuse repeat the behaviour in their own lives. So it was with Gerry Rafferty.

Amidst the emotional trauma, and the monsters with whom Gerry battled as the result of his early life, he produced glimpses of musical skill, and dexterity, that many fans of his generation will remember forever. He was not the most prolific of songwriters, but much of his music is, and will remain, timeless. He gave pleasure to may people through his songs.

Wherever Gerry may find himself now that he is released from the trials of life on earth, may he experience peace and serenity, and no memory of the negative things of his past life.
