Valero and Marquez Should Face Each Other to Make a Case at Challenging King-of-the-hill Pacquiao

All roads lead to Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao!

Tungod, Inabanga, Bohol – In the undying Pacquiao-Mayweather saga, two contrasting fighters are somehow left out in the cold. One is a hungry young lion vigorously trying to seek recognition, while the other one continues to struggle to keep his now precarious spot among the elites. Hammer-handed knockout freak Edwin Valero of Venezuela not only strives to gain acceptance by the licensing commissions, but more so endeavors for validation as a certified boxing phenom, who might very well take over the reigns as one of the sport’s top draws in the seemingly inevitable post Manny Pacquiao era. Mexican pride Juan Manuel Marquez, on the other hand, simply wants to prove that he’s not totally washed up and establish himself, if he hasn’t done it yet, as the ultimate matador to ferocious raging bulls. Both fighters want a shot at the Pacman, but nobody, and I mean NOBODY, at this point in time thinks that they have a case to challenge boxing’s best fighter pound for pound… not unless they hurdle a significant name – perhaps Marquez for Valero and Valero for Marquez. It couldn’t get any better than that.

Valero’s uncanny ability to score a knockout victory was first dismissed as mere hype simply because he was literally fed with cab drivers, especially in the earlier stages of his boxing career. It was only recently when he met genuine challenges. There were instances when he had to struggle and even visit the canvass, which basically suggests his vulnerability. But then again, what matters most is the fact that he found a way to win… and win big at that by scoring a knockout in all his ring assignments, thus far. That, indeed, is a testament to his sturdy heart and immense will to win. The closest comparison I can think of is the late Diego Corrales. Of course he could very well end up so much better. Valero hasn’t fought someone with the defensive acumen that Marquez puts to the table. If he bulldozes his way to a dominant victory, then he can brag at something that Manny Pacquiao was unable to do.

Now let’s focus our attention at Juan Manuel Marquez, probably the only pug who can lay claim as the fighter who gave Manny Pacquiao fits. That’s already saying something, especially considering the quality of Pacquiao’s list of victims. Unfortunately for the Mexican Dynamite, pundits and fans alike no longer consider him as a legitimate threat to the Filipino firebomb. Pacquiao seemed susceptible to his marksmanship and skills at lightweight. But north of it, the general consensus is that the Pinoy idol is going to crush him for his first knockout loss. Of course, that still remains to be seen. Time is, however, not on his side, as father time is slowly catching up on him. Valero is his best chance for another shot at glory… and possibly complete a trilogy with his very popular nemesis. He’s not expected to win if that happens… but most assuredly, after all’s been said and done, he is definitely going to laugh his way to the bank!

    i totally agree with a marquez-valero match-up;
    1) this will be a very very good fight specially if they do it as a lightweight title unification bout –and there will a lot of interest if promoted properly, which should include a guarantee that the winner gets to fight pacquiao come november
    2) such a fight sets the table properly for a subsequent fight with pacquiao –and arum should do so specially because pacquiao-mayweather will in all probability not be a reality due to mayweather’s uncanny ability to shoot down the fight everyone wants to see –either out of fear or plain stupidity, or probably both
    3) the biggest stumbling block to this scenario is if pacquiao can still, or if pacquiao will still be willing to fight the winner at 140 lbs. –because pacquiao will have a built-in advantage if the eventual fight with the winner will be at the full welterweight limit; of course that is pacquiao’s prerogative (to take advantage) because he is the biggest attraction
    4) this should be done ASAP so that pacquiao can fight the winner come november –REMEMBER even if mosley wins against mayweather (which is very possible as far as i am concerned) he is locked-in contractually by a re-match clause which he agreed to
    5) hence, this indeed should be done asap so that it will still be a super-fight for pacquiao come november –because a fight with margarito and/or berto and/or bradley will pale so much in comparison to pacquiao fighting the winner of marquez-valero; so will the dollars to be earned.
    6) all the above will be for the good of boxing long-term.

    Pac will KO either Marquez or Valero. The only significant fight kegacy wise for Pac is the PBF vs. Mosley winner. If he only wants easy money then that’s the only reason he will fight Valero or Marquez.

    I agree; Marquez & Valero should fight at 140 ASAP and Arum should ensure this happens. This would be an awesome fight for all fans. Winner should take on and beat a significant Welterweight that would substantiate a fight with Pacquiao at 147. If Mosley crushes Mayweather, the latter may not want to get slaughtered again in a rematch, so it may be Pacquiao-Mosley in November anyway; which would be the very best fight possible at welterweight for all fans.

    Yeah I think it would be a nice suggestion having these two meet first. I have this observation regarding the opponents and quality of fighters Bob Arum dangles with Manny Pacquiao. After Clottey, the name of Antonio Margarito cropped up. It would be understandable that Margarito can draw crowd and can sell but it would be a sort of mismatch considering the discrepancy in their height. Not only that, Margarito cheated during his fight with Miguel Cotto and he has yet to obtain his license in Las Vegas. Pacquiao needs time to rest after banging with Joshua Clottey. Those uppercuts and power punches inflicted by Clottey were enough to clog his brain. One more fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will finally put an end to covet the ultimate title, pound for pound king.

    IF HATTON WANTS TO MAKE SENSE IN HIS RETURN TO BOXING AND VALERO NEEDS A FIGHT THAT WILL MAKE HIM CLOSER TO FIGHT PACQUIAO THEN IT’S MORE SENSIBLE THAT THEY WILL PROVE IT IN THE RING “HATTON VS VALERO” IT MAKE MORE SENSE
