Who’s Bad?
Michael Jackson.
He wasn’t off the wall. He was a thriller! He proved to the world that he was bad. He made his competitors, beat it!
On June 25, 2009, the world lost an extremely-gifted entertainer. Michael Jackson’s talents were unmatched. There was Michael Jackson, then, there was everyone else. His death shocked the world. For many of us, it was like losing a family member, because we grew up with Michael Jackson, and the Jackson 5.
We have all heard the story of how the Jacksons rose to fame. Their story truly is an American dream.
Michael started singing with his brothers. They were known as the Jackson 5. All of the brothers were talented, however, it was very clear, even then, whose star shined the brightest. Even at the age of five, Michael’s singing and dancing, was well beyond his years. He was a huge fan of Jackie Wilson and James Brown.
Michael took music to another level. His success with the Jackson 5, paled in comparison, for what was to come.
His first album as a solo artist was, “Off the Wall.” It was off the charts, too; it was a multi-platinum success. But his next album, would be etched in history. “Thriller” is the biggest-selling album of all time. “Bad” didn’t do badly, either; it sold over 30 million albums, and counting …
Many often said that Michael would never top, “Thriller.” My take, he didn’t have to. He did what no other artist in history has ever done. He didn’t have to prove anything. To anyone. His remarkable accomplishments can never be taken from him. Not even in death.
Michael broke barriers. He broke countless records. His dancing was mesmerizing. He gave new meaning to the word, fancy feet. His voice, unique. Michael penned many unforgettable, timeless songs.
He also had a huge heart. Many know that he is in the Guinness Book of World Records because of, “Thriller.” He is also in that same record-breaking book for most charities supported by a pop star. As usual, Michael tops that list, too. He really did want to heal the world and make it a better place. He backed his words up, with action. Michael had his critics. We all do.
His contribution to music is unparalleled. Immeasurable. There are many imitators. But, there is only one original.
Like millions of people around the world, I watched, “The Michael Jackson Memorial.” It was a very beautiful and heartfelt ceremony. I cried. A lot.
Since Michael’s death, there have been many tributes. The sad thing is, he wasn’t alive to see any of it. Or hear the beautiful words of so many. It is so important that we give people their flowers while they are alive. When it truly matters.
Michael Joseph Jackson studied the greats, only to become … the GREATEST!
My thoughts and prayers are with the Jackson family.
R.I.P., Mr. Jackson.
