CNN Headline News asked the burning questions: who is the father of Michael Jackson’s children? and Who should get custody of the children? Both questions can be answered with yet another question: What makes a family?

Foundation of a good family structure include love, nurture, shelter and support. Michael Jackson was responsible and did provide all of these things for his children. He was the parent who provided shelter and support both physically and emotionally. Now, a little reproduction 101. We know that a female egg and ovary and the male sperm is needed in the production of a child. Sometimes, people choose to cheat nature and create a child by artificial insemination. Sometimes, as we know people even choose to be surrogate parents. These parents only choose to give birth to the child; not raise the child. This is what Debbie Rowe chose to do. She voluntarily gave up her parental rights and gave Michael Jackson the children. Michael Jackson raised the children and was their acting father. Whether biological or not, this is who the kids know as their father. If anyone asks them who their father is, they will answer, Michael Jackson. They do not know of any other father figure.

Reproductive organs alone don’t make great parents- being there and providing does. So, the answer to burning question #1 (who is the father of Michael Jackson’s children?) is Michael Jackson.

The next question on most people’s mind is: who should get custody of the kids? Michael Jackson’s wish was that either his mother or singer, Diana Ross should get custody in his absence. I believe that this wish should be granted. Firstly, their biological mother gave up her rights. She was not present in these kids’ life. They have no relationship with their biological mother. However, they do have a relationship with Katherine and their aunts and uncles. I feel that they should be placed in this environment. It is one in which they are comfortable and familiar. The Jacksons have provided the family foundation that these children need. I feel it should remain this way. There is no reason why they should be taken out of their environment. Debbie Rowe should not get custody. Whether she is proven both financially and or emotionally stable, custody should not be granted to her. If custody is granted, I feel as if the children would become emotionally unstable from being taken out of their familiar surroundings.

So, what makes a family? Love. The Jacksons provided these children with love. They do not need to go else where.
