Are Old Parents The Responsiblity of The Scoeity?

by Jerry Jose in Philanthropy, November 29, 2009

Old is gold. Is it correct? In some cases it may true but in most cases the statement is not right. In case of human begins I have a doubt that whether it is correct or not. Today we have visited an old age home. It was a special visit by a charitable society and the particular old age home also runs by a leading charitable society, and the home is meant for poor orphan old people.

We wished to spend some time with the old people and also planned to have lunch with them. We have done all arrangements for the lunch. We reached there in time, I mean two three hours before lunch. When we talk with the inmates, we realized that most of them are not orphans. They have children or close relatives, but they are not ready to look after them. Most of these aged people were spending all their good time in their life for their family and children. But when they need help and support, they are being rejected by their children or close relatives.

Some of the inmates have children in good position in the society also. But these high status children are not ready to take care of their old parents or they don’t have time to look after them. This is a serious problem in the society. ehrn they becone old  they are being rejected and left for the mercy of some charitable organizations. Is it justifiable? Yes I can agree that in this nuclear family setup they may not have enough time or convenience to take care of their old ones.

What could we do in this situation? Should we avoid them willfully. Yes some developed countries have their own arrangements to look after their senior citizens who have devoted thier time and enerfy to build up the nation. What can others do? Let us think and pray for them and also can realize that once we also may be in this position, a totally rejected situation. The present is in our hands, past we cannot rectify and the future is not in our control. Let us do the needful to soften the present condition.
