Donating Hair

Information on places to donate hair.

There are many women throughout the country who experience hair loss for many different reasons. The most common reason is the side effects from Chemotherapy as well as radiation as part of treatments for cancer. Loosing your hair can be traumatic experience especially for women. It is almost as if we have lost a part of ourselves. I personally know the effects of hir loss due to my own cancer treatments. It makes you feel less of a woman, less attractive and as if you are no longer the person you once were. It is almost as traumatizing as finding out that you have cancer. Many women opt for wearing hats or scarves while others opt for having wigs or a little of all three. I personally couldn’t wear wigs because it didn’t feel like they were my hair. Many other women feel the same way, that the wigs aren’t their hair and then they aren’t the same person.

There are different options for wigs from real hair wigs to synthetic wigs. The synthetic ones you caan get in any style, color and length that you would want them to be, but you cannot style them the way you could with real hair wigs. You can’t blow dry it, curl it or anything else that used heat. If you had a wig you also needed to be careful of dishwashers as well as ovens because the heat could melt the wigs. That is something no woman wants when she spends a large amount of money on a wig. The other option, real hair wigs is very appealing. Mainly because it is real hair, it will feel more natural than synthetic wigs. You can style them, use products, be near heat and so much more. The only problem with real hair wigs is that they are so expensive ranging from 35 dollars on Ebay (but how much can you trust Ebay for a wig?) to about 999 at wilshirewigs.com or 679 at headcovers.com. Many women cannot afford to buy these wigs no matter how normal it would make them feel. But there is hope. There are organizations out there that work towards providing real hair wigs form women and children who cannot afford them.

Locks Of Love is probably one of the most famous organizations that make wigs for children who cannot afford them. Yes they make wigs especially for children. Their goal is to help s many children feel normal, have self confidence, and courage to face the world through their struggles. Locks of Love wigs takes 10 inches of hair from tip to tip. It needs to be in a braid or a ponytail for easy transportation. This may seem like common sense, but the hair that is being donated needs to be washed and dried before cut and donated. No one wants to have a wig made with dirty hair or hair that has a lot of product in it. The organization provides wigs for children who of course are unable to pay for a real hair wig, or even a wig itself. The children do recieve the wigs free of charge or on a sliding scale based on financial need.

Hair that Cares, Inc. is a non-profit organization that grants medical wigs to financially deprived adults and children who suffer from medical related hair loss.

Created from the concept when people look good, they have a tendency to feel good, the founders of Hair that Cares, Inc. realize that patients suffering from hair loss may not be able to afford realistic looking hair alternatives. Some insurance companies do not cover the expense of a quality medical wig.

We help those, but limited to, Chemotherapy Patients, Progeria and Alopecia Areata sufferers.
