Free Things for Charity
Have you ever noticed when you give to come charities you get something back like a teddy bear or T-shirt? Does that not defeat the purpose of donating?
There are a lot of things that make no sense in the world, I am tempted to list them but I am sure the editors at Triond have better things to do then edit a 1 thousand page list. I would like to focus on the ads we are bombarded with daily, I am sure some are public service by the owner of the median of advertising (AKA free) but most are paid for. I feel by donating to that charity I am wasting my money as it goes into advertising not actually what the charity is for! If I see too many advertisements for a charity I purposely avoid them!
Almost always now the charities offer you a reward for donating like a teddy bear or a T-shirt or a packet about something or other! This makes me VERY upset as now half my donation is me technically buying an overpriced shirt which I don’t want in the first place! I guess I get to wear a shirt with a panda on it! I would rather that panda still be alive, but that is just me! I went through a fast food drive through the other day and they asked if I would donate 2$ to something or other, I am just a normal person but I was just like, sure. I would help someone while I ate. I got to the window. They gave me an eraser and a 1L drink for donating! OK. 20 cent eraser, almost bearable. 1$ pop now 80cents of my donation goes to the charity! Now the shipping and handling and administration. The kid that needs school supplies got about 5cents from me!
Now that is a massive waste but how about a teddy bear for a 50$ donation! Sweet! The teddy is only worth 10$ so I actually give 40$ to the starving kids who DON’T have a teddy bear! Now I feel guilty because I have a teddy bear and they don’t! So I call the charity! Can you send my teddy to a starving kid they probably could use some good cheer as well as food! Sorry the teddy bear is yours we aren’t allowed to send it anywhere else! Oh, Okay! I’ll just keep the teddy! I love having a teddy anyway!
The other day I got a surprise in the mail! A NICKLE! It asked me to return it to the charity under the assumption I would send it back with more! I decided to send it to a different charity with a note saying they should thank the other for their 5cent donation! Seriously! Trying to make us feel bad over 5cents is pathetic I have boycotted that charity and they will never see another dime from me let alone a nickle!

Hi Routledge,
I am right there with you, I have often wondered the same thing myself, why would a charity send me a gift for giving a donation!
You expressed it well, glad to know someone else feels the same.

Good points, I think about those things too. Sometimes though the gift you receive has been donated to the merchant, so it doesn’t cost them anything, or if it did, they can write it off as a charitable donation. But seriously, it makes you wonder. What really got me going the other night was when the American baseball World Series (Phillies) MVP winner was given a nice new Chevy. Chevrolet is going out of business and they give away a free car…to a millionaire? God help us. I have an article in the works on this one.

I’m also not fond of getting something when donating to a charity. I have always thought that they do that as an enticement to get more folks to donate. Some people really do want that teddy bear or t-shirt.
