Giving Back to the Community

by NICHOL in Philanthropy, December 30, 2008

On Thursday, September 11, 2008 Jrama Entertainment presented the Southern Tier Aids Program (STAP) with a check for $250.00. This was a portion of the proceeds from their latest Comedy Show.

Jrama Entertainment is an entertainment and event planning company that strives to provide quality entertainment while simultaneously providing assistance to organizations and agencies that provide services beneficial to the community. It was founded in 1998 as a promotions company that would negotiate event contracts primarily for the cultural and social fraternal organizations of Binghamton University.

Husband and wife owners Jamar and Nicole Johnson met at Binghamton University in 1997. Both are alumni. Jamar has a BA in Sociology and works as a Family Life Specialist for Wyoming Conference Children’s Home. Nicole has a Masters in Public Administration and will complete her doctoral work in Political Science this fall. She is an Assistant Director in Admissions and recruits for the university in five boroughs in New York City. They married in 2001 and live in Binghamton with their two children.

There was a need to increase social awareness through fundraising, which is exactly what Jrama Entertainment does with every event. Jamar said, “Community Service has always been a part of their program”. Jrama Entertainment reaches a larger community audience. Past beneficiaries of their events have been the Triple Cities Championship Boxing Gym and The Broome County Red Cross.

On Thursday, September 11, 2008 Jrama Entertainment presented the Southern Tier Aids Program (STAP) with a check for $250.00 that was a portion of the proceeds from their latest Comedy Show. The (“Laughing Out Loud”) show took place on August 23, 2008 and this event featured Chippella Lewis and Lawrence Parham who are both sexuality health educators with the Southern Tier Aids Program (STAP). During this event both educators engaged the large crowd of about 300 people with startling statistics about the affects of HIV/Aids in our community, distributed harm-reduction materials such as afro-centric colored condom packs and informative brochures that compelled individuals to make healthy choices when practicing safer-sex.

STAP having distributed over 350 condom packs during the Comedy Show, “We know that HIV/Aids is no laughing matter” Nicole said. “If we can encourage people to bee safe, prevent the spread of the disease, and decrease STD’s we have served them in more ways than one”. “We have a voice and can reach a lot of people through our events” Nicole also states.

The focus now for Jrama Entertainment is to purchase a building within the next year to have the ability to secure a variety of events from weddings to high scale music and comedy shows. “The rate of growth the business is experiencing will not be manageable much longer without a venue of our own” Jamar states. “However, in the interim, expect to see bigger and better events from us!
