How to Gain Valuable Experience in Your Spare Time
A quick internet search using the keywords volunteer and writing immediately yield results from organizations hoping for some talented, hard-working individuals who may be short on experience but willing to learn and contribute – free of charge. This is an excellent way to jump start your future.
Perhaps you know something about web design or marketing but want to specialize. The nonprofit sector is overflowing with opportunities that are mutually rewarding and especially lucrative. Do not hesitate to ask for a professional reference if you feel the services rendered are deserving.
Some great places to start include VolunteerMatch.org and Idealist.org.
The positions may be virtual and in my personal experience, credible and for reputable organizations. When I began to design spaces to market initiatives using Google Pages, I quickly became the Web Developer, learned to create forms and expand upon my basic knowledge. Later I would write copy, plan a large summit at a university and even write a proclamation for a city mayor!
Opportunity can be difficult to encounter when skill development is an issue. Many nonprofits will assign you to a team of people from various backgrounds and abilities. Let them know where your skills need refinement and communicate your desire to learn. Believe me, there is typically more than enough work for anyone willing to do the time.
You may have a skill that requires you to work on site. Look to local nonprofit organizations by calling your local Chamber of Commerce or by searching your state’s nonprofit business licenses. Volunteering allows for networking which may just lead to a future you can’t begin to imagine!
