Latter Day Saints Orphanage Home

The Church of Jesus Christ of LATER Day Saints.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides relief and development projects for humanitarian purposes in countries all over the world. Projects operate without regard to the nationality or religion of the recipients. They provide emergency response to natural disasters, such as the effects of war and famine, also be part of of a longer term effort to meet serious human needs, such as the need to alleviate disease. Within hours of a disaster, the Church works with local government officials to determine what supplies and food are needed, materials are then sent to the area.

The Church looks for additional ways to help with the long term needs of the community, after urgent needs are met the Church’s approach is to be self reliant by teaching skills and providing resources for a self sustained life. Donations from Church members but also from people around the world, are used to make relief projects possible. One hundred percent of donations given to the Church’s humanitarian services are used for relief efforts, the Church absorbs its own overhead costs. Initiatives include neonatal training, clean water projects, wheelchair distribution, vision treatment and measles vaccinations.

Missionary Programme

The Latter-day Saints missionary programme is one of the most recognized characteristics, Mormon missionaries can be seen on the streets of hundreds of major cities in the world as well as thousands of smaller communities. the missionary effort is based on missionaries serving in pairs, teaching the gospel. More than 50,000 missionaries are serving missions at any one time, most are young people under the age of 25 serving in nearly 350 missions through out the world. Missionaries can be single men between the ages of 19 and 25, single women over the age 21 or retired couples, missions are generally served for two years and single woman for 18 months. Missionaries receive assignments from the Church headquarters and are sent only to countries where governments allow the Church to operate, before going on assignments they spend a short period of time at one of 15 missionary training centres throughout the world. The largest training centre is in Provo, Utah, with additional centres in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Dominican Republic, England, Ghana, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Africa and Spain.

Latter Days Saint Orphanage Home.

The Orphanage Home is a community based organisation, the centre was started and registered in 2004 in response to the needs of Orphans and vulnerable children in Soweto slum. The centre started with two children who were abandoned by their parents and rescued by the district officials and brought to the founders home, now it is a home to 51 children both boys and girls, either orphans or abandoned for a multitude of reasons although a majority are due to the HIV epidemic, poverty and unwanted pregnancies. The dedicated caregivers at Good Samaritan are working hard to provide the basics of life, shelter, security and food, however it is education that can break the cycle of poverty. Ghana has over one million orphans and vulnerable children living in children’s homes which are privately funded and operated, there is little government assistance. Good Samaritan was built six years ago and to date receives no stable funding. They receive some donations like food items and clothing from people in the local community.

The caregivers at the Orphanage are dedicated and loving and doing the best they can with very little and limited resources that they have. At the least they are providing these children with a stable family environment, the children are between 6 months and 16 years old and are all attending a formal education. The most important aim of Latter Day Saint Orphanage home is to give the children a place where they feel welcome, protected and loved and where they feel home. To reach that goal the centre provides the children with a good permanent shelter and a stable surrounding. To carry out future plans and to realize a mission and vision, financial help is required to achieve goals. At the time the financial situation for the centre does not allow to buy new clothes for the children, they are dependant on used clothes given as donation. Donations are always grateful for the Orphanage.
