Oprah Winfrey’s Charitable Contributions

Oprah Winfrey has been around for many years and she consistently gives back to the national and international community.

Oprah Gail Winfrey was born in Mississippi on January 29, 1954. She was first raised by her grandmother, then around her preteen years and early teens by her mother, and was then raised by her father, later in her teen years. While each experience was extremely different, none was as unique as the time she spent at her moms. During her time residing at her mother’s, her mother’s friends, and family relatives sexually abused Oprah, an experience that has scared her, and given her a different perspective on life. Because she did not have an ideal upbringing and was constantly moving, from one home to another, Oprah has become an inspiring and compassionate person who genuinely likes helping others.

When Oprah was still in high school, she started broadcasting, and later while attending the university of Tennessee she was asked to host an am morning talk show. When the continuously low ratings, suddenly skyrocketed the producers decided to rename the show “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, and was extended to a one hour long segment. The show became a huge success and is still presently one of the highest rated morning talk shows. Soon after the talk show was established and became a hit, Oprah bought the company, which owned her hit talk show, now presently called Harpo (Oprah spelled backwards).

Each year on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah uses the income she makes to bring a little joy to some of her audiences, especially around Christmas. At Christmas time each year she collects all of her favorite items, such as food, books, CDs etc, and give a copy of everything to each audience member.

Aside from the Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah established the Angel Network on September of 1997. This network was designed to get people to spend more time helping others, and is devoted to helping people in as many ways as possible. Through the Angel Network over 12 million dollars has been raised so far, 7 million dollars being donated from celebrities and sponsors, and the remaining 5.1 million dollars has been donated from viewers. Scholarships have also been awarded to 150 students. Furthermore, through the Angel Network Oprah has funded over 200 residences in association with Habitat for Humanity, and has funded the construction of 34 schools in a total of 10 different countries, in association with Kids Can Free Children. In April of 2000, Use Your Life Award was established, and awards were handed-out to children contributing to their communities. To date 4.35 million dollars has been given out through this organization.

The Oprah Winfrey Foundation was created to sustain the encouragement, “empowerment”, and learning of people throughout the globe. Oprah has made 100s of donations to organizations, which do just that. The Oprah Winfrey Foundations is still to establish itself in developing countries. She has also contributed millions of dollars to children who are ardent students and who do not have the money to attend excellent schools.

She has also partnered up with South African Ministry of Education, to construct schools for females, in hopes of giving them a brighter future and more opportunities.

In December of 2002 with Christmas Kindness South Africa, Oprah gave children clothes, foods, books, shoes, and lots of other things. For a second time, this past Christmas Oprah went to Africa for 21 days where she hoped to raise awareness about poverty and through her Angel network set up a fund, where people could make donations to help the children.

Oprah is a well-loved woman, and for many reasons. She loves helping others and devotes her free time to personally bettering the lives of others. Of her riches she has donated millions to charities, and continues to donate and help others. The things shes done for others is endless and extremely selfless. She has helped people not only in the United States but internationally as well.
