Volunteer and Help Yourself

Very few people go through life without a bout or two of self pity or at least feeling down and out.  At the present time there are many people without jobs or in fear of losing their jobs.  When this happens it is very easy to get a little depressed or blue about how unfair life is or how others have so much more.  Once this happens the road spirals downward quickly into a place of despair.  However, this does not have to be the case at all.  With a little effort,  tough times can turn into a rewarding time and often become a time of learning and self fulfillment.    It has a lot to do with attitude and how time is allocated.  Volunteer work is a marvelous way to take your time off your own worries and do some good for someone else.  In the process, you might just learn a thing or two.

Every community is in need of people to help out.  There are so many ways to volunteer your time to do some good for someone else.   For example, homeless shelters are constantly in need of people to help.  Seeing people that do not have a home of their own is a very humbling experience.  Somehow not having money to go out to dinner three times a week does not seem very significant when you witness a mom trying to keep her kids together and safe without a place to live.  If that scenario is too graphic, simply offer to be a volunteer at an elementary school.  Meet a kid that would love to learn to read but does not have anyone at home to read to him or her.  Or perhaps you could simply volunteer to help out in the library at a local school  The list of opportunities in public schools to be of assistance is endless.  Sometimes, something as simple as 30 minutes can mean a great deal to a child that is need of attention.

It is not very useful to wallow in self pity when there are things that can be done of value to others.  Once you are out and about with an attitude of helpfulness it is unbelievable how fast you receive the rewards.  There are many organizations that can use assistance so get moving!
