Ways to Help Your Elderly Loved Ones

Caring for an aging family member can be stressful for everyone involved. As a caregiver to an ailing parent, I struggle to find a balance between providing enough independence and caring for my mother. At the same time, I’m also busy with my own family and children which occupy much of my time. I often struggle to know how best to care for everyone in my life, but it can be really difficult.

One thing that has really helped me in providing independence to my mother without neglecting her is the introduction of an emergency alert device.  I love the idea of my mother being able to call for help no matter where she is, even if no one is home to help her.  This device has provided her the ability to care for herself a good portion of the day, and lets us all rest easy, knowing that if she needs something, she can let us know.

Specifically, we use a medipendant that she can wear around her neck everywhere she goes.  All she needs to do is push a button and immediately she can speak with a live operator who can dispatch help immediately.  I never worry she will fall and lay on the ground for hours waiting for someone to find her because her device is always with her.

My mother is also able to participate in the Meals on Wheels service in our area which provides her with a nice hot lunch each day.  Beyond the food, she also appreciates the company and I feel good knowing someone else is checking in each day and making sure my mother is feeling ok and staying well fed.

Using these services, my mother has been able to stay in her own home and continue maintaining independent living even as she continues to age.  Hopefully, the coming years will let her continue to age gracefully while knowing that we are always close by to reach out and help.
