A Contempt for a Contempt for Disillusionment

An essay I wrote for a class last semester. It isn’t perfect but I think it expands on some of Baudrillard’s ideas in some interesting ways. Please let me know what you think and I would definitely recommend you read the Baudrillard essay if this interests you, it is gold from start to finish, and he branches out quite a bit more, while I just focused on religion in this one.

We find faith being replaced by a significantly more rational system of belief; not belief in a higher power, but a belief in something greater than ourselves. We have seen that the symbol of God has no consistent incarnation, and begun to realize that humanity is the most tangible and evidenced entity greater than ourselves. It is through this realization that I can proudly call myself an atheist, not because I believe there is no God, but because I highly doubt it, and have found consolation in the knowledge that I really don’t care. As we lose our faith in God, we must shift that faith to ourselves, which is fundamentally, a shift towards the unknown. This is the way in which atheistic thought becomes in and of itself a rational simulacrum that will eventually and inevitably absorb and discard the fast crumbling remnants of the divine simulacrum.

So it is easy to see that Baudrillard’s essay lays the foundation for a rather compelling (and modest) argument against the existence of a divine being. His thorough explanation of the way in which a series of signs becomes inevitably and exponentially disconnected from its source of origin runs in parallel with the evolution of religion up to this very day. I can only hope that within my lifetime rational thought will prevail, and we can aspire to upset the designs of the divine delusion in which our society has become ensnared. I can only hope (yet I dare not) that within my lifetime people will stand up and just live, instead of sitting around praying not to die.

Excellent work, I’m impressed. As a student of life, I believe more in nature and the gods. I appreciate your view, and your paper was very interesting.
