Getting Ahead in the Arts

Some thoughts on advancing in the arts.

Sometimes I wonder what to do to get my art product out, today there are so many gimmicks and people are more selective in choosing what they want so they won’t be feeling sorry if you happen to have been working over twenty years to get somewhere. The thing is to continue anyway on what you want to obtain for a goal and not be set off by those critics or the lack of immediate support; sometimes it does take many years before you get anywhere in the entertainment milieu. That can be said especially if you have to hold on to a day job that saps your energy and does not allow you to have the freedom of concentrating on your craft.

I would try different approaches and meet new people all the time if I have to get me to where I want to be. If you are doing unpaid bit parts for a local website creator than use that as a stepping-stone but then move on. This might even be what those creators have in mind, one has to realize that often enough some people are not meant to work with on a continued basis, so try to get something positive out of the encounter like a web based skit and move on to a paying gig. Paid work is difficult to find for the majority of actors so you have to hunt out what productions there are that would reward you with a few dollars at the end of your gig. Otherwise I would try to reinvent yourself and do comedy or radio work if you have only been doing dramatic roles up until then.
