Good vs. Evil

What is good and what is evil? Do they even exist?

In the words of Trent Reznor, “can this world really be as sad as it seems?” A world where green paper is worth more than a human life. Where the people on the television all look the same and everyone tries to be just like them. Just a mass of clones, copies, imitations and copies of imitations. Where everyone has to wear blue jeans or else your considered weird. Worst of all, where people live their entire lives for the sole purpose of obtaining money, just to spend it all on useless crap.

Every Sunday I would go to church and listen to the pastor about how greed and money is the root of all evil and laughing at him on the inside. I said to myself, “more like the root of all happiness.” I was only a naive young boy who knew nothing about money. That thing that consumes your life. When you’re young money equals more toys, but when we grow up our view of money should change. Many people look at their money the same way they look at their food, sadly, the more the better. When in reality it should be enough to live and be happy, and lets leave some for the rest.

In my mind greed has been the single thing keeping human kind down. When one thinks of getting more and more, he not only becomes consumed, he forgets about his fellow man. We’re a species stuck between man and animal. Except, we murder, rape, exploit, eat, and even attempt to destroy each other whole nations at a time, unlike animals. When we look at the bigger picture we begin to see that not money, greed, nor imperialism is root of all evil. We begin to see that the root of all evil, is man. So why should I bother being good, when in the long run it can only do me more harm? Those who are evil, always take advantage of those with a “code.”

Why is it that every time we have some man trying to do good for the world, he dies or gets murdered? Abraham Lincoln frees the slaves and gets shot. Martin Luther King Jr. gives everyone equal rights and gets shot. Jesus Christ is said to have taught compassion love and understanding, and speaks out against evil, then gets crucified. 2000 years later Gandhi preaches similar things and also gets murdered. Who is taking all our best people and why? Is this evil defeating good? Or is this God taking the good out of an evil world? Are we being punished for being good, are we supposed to be evil?

If there really is a struggle on earth between good and evil, then evil is very clearly winning. The world around us is deteriorating and yet we pull up a chair and watch it all go down. The world is on fire, and we all need to come together to put the fire out, but we won’t. If there really is a good vs evil, wouldn’t you rather be on the good side? Maybe good is a false concept. Maybe man is and has always been doomed to suffer because of his own selfish desires.

Burdened by the questions and heavy thoughts that lead to more thoughts and almost lead me to the brink of insanity. My mind wants answers to the questions, are we really alone? Should I even bother being good if I don’t even truly know that it even exists. I wonder to myself about hell and what hell would be like. If hell is a godless land of suffering, cruelty, murder and war. If hell is a place where were left in the dark wondering if someone is going to turn the light on. If hell is a place where evil lurks at every turn and no one will save you from it and God never shows his face. Then I wonder, if hell is all these things, aren’t we already here?
