How Important is Morality in Today’s Society?
Morals are what keep nations alive. Take a look at Roman history for yourself. If it were not for Godly morals, how would America stay prosperous? If America’s morals eventually become discarded, who will save Her? Will democracy save Her?
American Morals
Morals are what keeps America alive. If you look at various other ancient civilizations, what do all of them have in common? They are no more. This is usually the result of the moral breakdown of the families that inhabit the nation. Rome was a great example of a nation lacking in morals. There was a greater percentage of homosexual Romans then, than there are homosexuals in America now. Most Romans, for entertainment, went to the Colosseum to watch the gladiators. These gladiators would fight to the death and whoever won got to live. Eventually, the Roman’s lack of morals got the best of them.
Morality has three essential meanings. The first meaning, much of which was talked about in Mere Christianity, is the basic code of conduct and the differences between what is right and what is wrong. This meaning is very subjective. One culture might do something that they think is right and a another culture might think it is completely wrong. Morality’s second meaning is in more of a universal sense. Statements can be made that committing adultery is wrong and immoral, stealing from your neighbor is wrong and immoral, and murdering someone is wrong and immoral. This usage of the word is more of an ideal code of conduct and belief. The final meaning is the same as the word “ethics”. Is it moral (ethical) to practice capital punishment? How can a moral decision be made against specific, and sometimes hypothetical, situations.
What happens when immorality attacks a nation? Well, by looking at historic examples, it drains away the people’s liveliness, their vigor. It is a simple fact that whenever you give into Satan’s temptations you lose some of your will power. You might be asking right now, “Well, how do you build it back up?” You can do this by not giving into temptations. Let’s say I really want a donut right now. However, I do not want to spend any of my money right now. If I gave in and bought a donut, would it be easier or harder to not buy the donut next time? This applies to morals as well. This new generation is growing up in a time of great immorality. You can no longer watch television without the commercials becoming too immodest to be comfortable with watching.Satan has a horrific grip on this country. He has convinced too many people to waste energy on pornography and pleasure seeking. One thing that most people do not realize is that morality is the foundation, the cornerstone, of every nation, civilization, or country. How many nations have succeeded in sustaining their “greatness” without morality?
Many immoral people in America, once again, do not realize that if it were not for the moral people then they would not be living in such a great country. Morality is, in my opinion, attached to religion. Moral standards, for us, come from the Bible. What are the universal standards of morality for those who are not Christians? This is the subjective part of morality. Thus each non-Christian family wishing to sustain their morals must make up their own standards which may or may not differ from the Bible.
Morals, according to C.S. Lewis, are like precautions in running the human machine. They prevent friction, breakdowns, and harmful objects from entering. When America becomes immoral, will we still be able to worship God like we can now? Will democracy be able to save us when (or if) that time comes?
