Living, Survival, Happiness & Selfishness

by Liam Moore in Philosophy, December 8, 2007

Do you ever wonder why we want to survive or why we are here at all? Understanding life can help us feel better with our lives without having to change it.

What do You do for a living?

It seems like such a normal question, something everyone has been asked, No one hesitates before answering the question. No one is taken aback by what a strange question it is.

What does it mean?

Many people will answer back with the words “I”m a mechanic, a plumber, a nurse, an office clerk, an engineer’ and when asked if they are happy to do the job, with its poor salary, benefits, conditions, hours. They invariable answer “No, but what choice do I have.” Some people will claim they enjoy their job, but they tend to be much happier at weekends or on their holidays. Also who would be happily willing to do their jobs on Christmas day, Boxing day, New Years day. I know many do, but do they really enjoy their work so much.

So what does living and survival mean?

It means life, it means not dying, it means continuing to breathe and that is all. So why survive? Why be alive? The answer is one simple word, something everyone wants and tries to gain in their own way. It is the reason to survive; it is something which will affect every decision no matter how big or small every person on the planet, whether you are 1 year or 100 years old. It is something people will spend their whole life trying to find and can’t survive without it. It is called Happiness. Happiness. Simple. Almost an anti-climax, but think about every action that you take. Why do you do it?

Two Simple Laws

There are two simple laws present in every person from the Industrial West to the cultural Far East to the Local Tribes in Africa to the American Dream. They are:

  1. Everything you do you do for Happiness.
  2. Everything you do you do for selfish reasons.

Some people may disagree with those statements a little. You may find it hard to think that there is no totally selfless act, but let me ask you again “Why do you do it?”

Example

A simple example is of the old lady crossing the road. You see her struggling and go to help. You are in a rush and have a meeting to keep but you insist on helping this woman. Why? It’s because you will feel better in yourself for helping someone. It means you are a nice, kind person and that makes you feel good. Another scenario is that you see the old lady but ignore her and carry on to your meeting. Does that make you a bad person? No, because you had consideration for the person you were meeting, and at that time when you needed to make a decision you chose to carry on because that made you happier at that moment. There is no right or wrong decision in any situation; it is what makes you happier at that moment.

If you’re not happy why survive?
