Perfectly Normal

What does it mean to be perfectly normal? The question people ask most about themselves is some variation of the question "am I normal". Let’s take a look at the concept of what is normal and put some peoples minds at rest.

There is a saying that we are always our own harshest critic and most people are their own worst enemy. It is true that we have more negative, self doubting thoughts about ourselves than anyone else has ever said about us. If one person says to us once that we are fat, we will usually replay that thought over in our mind thousands of times for years to come. We judge ourselves on a scale that we would never dream of using to judge anyone else by. We do all of this in an attempt to answer the question “am I perfectly normal?”.

Perfectly Normal – Everyone Asks The Question

I cannot prove this statement, but I would hazard to guess that pretty much every person has at some stage wondered whether some aspect of their being was “normal”. Whether it be some part of their physical appearance, feelings, desires or fears, everyone has doubted their normalcy at some stage. To doubt the fact that you are normal is perfectly normal in itself.

Humans are social beings. As social beings, there is generally a desire to ‘fit in’. This desire to ‘fit in’ leads us to form relationships with other people that have some sort of connection, whether it be a shared interest, physical trait or common goal. We do this in an attempt to feel normal. To be with people like us. Sometimes this can be a negative thing, leading us to form destructive friendships with people that have a negative influence on us. But the desire to feel normal is so strong that often people will do things they never thought they would, just to ‘fit in’.

So everyone asks the question, “am I normal?”. Unfortunately most people decide that they are in fact not normal in some way. It might not be anything big, but we all have something, perhaps that no one else knows about, which we think just isn’t normal. What are the common ones?

Perfectly Normal – Do I Look Normal?

As children one of the first thing that kids tease other kids about is their appearance. One of the most common topics on shows like Oprah or in magazines is our appearance and how to improve it. Is it then any wonder that the most common doubt we have about ourselves is whether we look normal?

When we are conceived, millions of genes combine with millions of other genes in billions of different combinations to form a perfectly unique person. This is why we are all different in some way. Nature, or God in my opinion, designed it this way. The very act of conception is designed to produce a totally unique person. We then spend the rest of our lives trying to be the same as everyone else. When it comes to appearance, there is no normal. And it is beautiful and wonderful and wondrous that there is no normal. I have a slightly curved spine. My brother used to tease me about it and I spent much of my younger years churning over it. I am not “normal”. But who is? I am just the way I was meant to be. The fact that I am not “normal” is perfectly normal.

I suppose “normal” is just another word for the social “average” or “mean”. The average in things like weight and height, and amount of hairs on your head (people have done this study! i believe the average head contains approximately 100,000 hairs at any given time!). With regards to feelign – if on average 50% of people or above experience a certain feeling, then it’s quite normal. Feeling normal feels safe and secure, like you belong. Sure, if you are below average in certain things, it’s not a great thing. I dont know how it can ever be a good thing to have some kind of impairment/ deficiency.. (suggestions welcome! :) ) But we shouldnt forget that abnormalities in certain things eg above average intelligence, or above average determination/ motivation/ creativity or whatever – is actually what drives humanity forward to continually progress and improve!
