Plato Ancient Greek Philosopher
Plato through his ideas and perspective of the world has had an influence through to modern times. Plato is still taught in many schools and universities across the globe.
He became a greatly respected thinker and writer, not bad for a modest former pupil of Socrates who lived 2,500 years ago.
The Ancient Greek Plato was one of the most important thinkers of the classical world and his impact went well beyond his native Athens. That influence was mainly due to his work The Republic, which set out his academic, political, and scientific ideas.
Despite arguably been Athens’ finest thinker during his own life time Plato was not entirely content with his lot. That was especially the case after his mentor Socrates was executed. The Republic was written partly to vindicate the ideas and the life of his old teacher. Instead of the chaos and the potential tyranny of democracy Plato suggested that the Guardian class of the best educated should control every city-state or empire.
The long – lasting legacy of Plato was assured by the fact that the Romans were heavily influenced by his philosophy, which in turn meant such ideas were used by the Christian Churches as well. Aside from his most famous student Aristotle he was the most influential Pagan philosopher upon Christianity.
