Six Questions of Socrates
Some of my thoughts on the book “Six Questions of Socrates” by Christopher Phillips. In this book they ask the questions, what is virtue, good, courage, piety, justice, and moderation. I sum up this essay with my answer to the question, “Is excellence still possible?”…
In my life I have achieved many things but I have achieved most in music. Many of these values I have and continue to practice when I am striving to become more excellent in the field of music. You may think that you just really need to practice on your instrument to get better using these goals as a pedestal. But these virtues are more than that, a really good musician has excellent skill in their instrument as well as a good heart, which with that comes good values. I have achieved these levels of excellent by a harmonic blend of all of these virtues. In my life I feel that I fall short in the area of courage. I don’t recall doing many purely courageous acts. I feel that I don’t like to take risks in situations that I feel are not worth taking the risk because the end result is not clearly predictable. I need to learn to take smart risks even if the ending result is probably bad, but I do need to realize if the overall ending will result in something good. For improving on my lacking of courage, I just need to take more risks in things that really matter to me. I do take risks but they are often things where I can have most of the control for the end result. With this being said I will continue to strive for moral excellence to become an individual of honorable virtues.
