Some Quotes of Ancient Philosophers

by Bren Parks in Philosophy, December 11, 2006

A few pearls of wisdom from the ancients. Read these to gain new insights into life.

So many times we do not realize that we can learn a lot from the ancient philosophers of the world. Over the years, I have collected a notebook full of them and thought I would share some of them. Here are some of my favorites.

  • Alexander the Great – You must live as if you will live forever and die tomorrow, both at the same time.
  • Sophocles – One must wait until the evening to see how splendid the day has been.
  • Confucius – What the superior man sees in himself is what the small man seeks in other.
  • Mohandas Ghandi – It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err,
  • Thucydides – History is Philosophy teaching by examples.
  • Cicero – The function of wisdom is to discriminate between good and evil.
  • Proverbs – Humility is the veil of greatness. Pride is the mask of ignorance.
  • Sophocles – Wisdom is the supreme part of happiness.

I also have a couple of my own:

  • Change is the only constant in life.
  • Heaven and hell are sometimes states of mind.
