Technofiction Review of "In Time" (2011)
The story may be a parable commenting on Social Darwinism. we tend to see ultra made and “proles” — to borrow a term from the book “1984″. we tend to see slightly of prole lifestyle — individuals living with days or hours of life left between “paychecks” — and slightly of ultra-rich — individuals with centuries of life displayed on their arms. there is nothing shown {of individuals|of individuals} in between or crossovers — people with millions of time and no cash, or vice versa. therefore this story is only parable, it isn’t exploring a neat new technology. (In fact, the most amazing thing in the movie is watching Amanda Seyfried sprint in contemporary high heels. Yeah, she really manages to do it! Wow!)
That said, here are some Technofiction details that didn’t build sense:
* everyone wears their “bank balance” on their arm. And, there is no security: you can transfer time, and steal time, simply by locking arms with another person. This community ought to have devised slightly of courtesy regarding this data by currently, additionally as some security.
* there is no discussion of where this time comes from, as in, how it’s created. there is millions of speak and demonstration of how it replaces cash, and the way there is a hyperinflation occurring, and therefore the usurious interest rates for loans created by proles, but none regarding how the time individuals are given is made or distributed.
* This future has this wondrous time invention, but only contemporary surveillance ability. These time transactions are treated like mastercard transactions, except for some reason, the time movements cannot be traced well enough by the police to trace down the protagonist quickly even after he “scores” an extra hundred years.
* there is a ton of depiction of reality show style new wealth, but none of old wealth or old competence. These wealthy individuals are not shown as experts at anything. Likewise, the one shot we tend to see of proles operating shows mindless assembly work. this can be something robots ought to be doing.
* no one acts like an old mind in a young body. everyone acts young… and conventionally enough to stay this story advancing during a} very conventional fashion.
* If these bodies are genetically designed to perpetually be young, they could simply be designed to perpetually be infertile additionally. there is not any need for the worry of a Malthusian crisis. (described in the story as the root reason society has this proles/ultra made split) and, there is no opt-out of this program, no one features a alternative not to participate.
So, the movie may be a disappointment… unless you are excited by parables regarding the evils of social Darwinism. there is not any magic or surprise in the lives of those individuals living with this wondrous technology. the most wondrous half is Seyfried moving at high speed in her heels.
