There is a Lot of Knowledge in the Elderly

Talking to the elderly can be fun, rewarding, interesting as well as entertaining.

Have you ever sat down and talked to an elderly person and really listened to what they were saying?
There is a lot of knowledge in an elderly persons mind that will be lost forever when they pass on. There were so many things that they did years ago that just aren’t done today.
They had and still have old home remedies that they used for colds, flues and other sicknesses, I remember an elderly person telling me once to put a cotton ball soaked in can milk on a boil and it would draw the core of the boil out in no time.
I also heard from another that if you get the pink eye to slice a raw potato and lay a slice of that potato about an inch thick on the eye affected and it would take the soreness and puffiness away, it won’t take the pink eye away but it sure will be less painful. I know this works! I tried it before after being told of the old remedy.

Have you ever went into a place such as a nursing home or a personal care home and just sat down and chatted with a few of the folks? They can tell you of years gone by where the economy was so bad that they lived on bread and lard. There are many stories of hard times gone by that they remember living and surviving. They have many stories of years gone by that they would love to tell to anyone that would care to listen.

Take a look around you sometime when you are out and take the time to smile and maybe even strike up a conversation with someone older than you are, you will be amazed at what you might hear and might learn. Instead of looking away from an older person just because they might be in a wheel chair or might be wrinkled or hard of hearing, try a little kindness and chatter. You will see how fast they perk up.
Their knowledge is endless! Let’s give them some time to share that knowledge with us, after all maybe someday it could come in handy.
We all will be old someday!
Just remember when you are looking at an elderly person that they were once young like you and probably looked at the elderly just as we look at the elderly now.

Happy chatting

I liked this article! I can tell you have a gentle, giving soul and truly care about the elderly. So many people today tend to disregard what our elders have to say, oftentimes directing their comments to the younger person in the group, as if the elder isn’t even there! Now being in my forties, I see things ina different way, and yet I don’t feel as old as I look. Through my eyes I feel young still(okay… some days I don’t!) and I’m sure many others have these very same feelings.

thanks for reading my article Rebecca. I’ve worked with the elderly on and off for quite a few years now and really love doing it. Smile I am in my late 40’s and getting closer to the elderly side (smile) I just hope I have caring and loving folks around when I get elderly. Again thanks for reading my article.

I enjoyed reading your article. I too care greatly for the elderly. To me they are our most beautiful assets in this world. I have all kinds of friends of many backgrouds and out of all of them, I love my elderly friends the best. They are wise and give great advice. Thanks!

    Hi,

I appreciate also your article. I share the same feelings. We have in France the same problems. Modern western society is full of prejudices regarding the elderly:

    They feel old
They are inactive physically and socially
    They are not healthy
    They are tech resistants

Feelings of isolation, loneliness, useless are highs among the ageing population causing depression and health disruption. It is a huge waste because we have so much to learn from them thanks to their rich potential of creation, knowledge and wisdom.

The elderly are really amazing. I have loved talking to them about everything. My grand children make me feel good as an elderly person. They love the stories I tell and beg for more. They love to laugh at things that we did not have when I was growing up, like cell phones, computers, e-pods and whatever all these gadgets are now a days. They want to know how we survived without them. LOL.
