Thought in Quotes
Examining the use of thought and thinking in quotes.
It is common for people to die before thinking quipped Bertrand Russell but the wit came the statement referring about how much sooner they decide to do so before rationalising. In “people would sooner die than think” we can think of the entire criminal world to say the world, those that arm that arm themselves before entering into a robbery and there the risks are clearly getting shot. In the Arab world caught in the upheaval of social change if there were a less violent way of embracing change there would be a greater chance for survival. Violence always brings in more violence whether for the better or not.
When Wittgenstein referred to the limit of thinking as being reached by being able to think about both sides of the limit, one at first feels that there is an impossible task of going beyond that limit. So in a sense he is also saying that, in my opinion that there is not limit to thinking because we will never be able to think what is on the other side of the limit in this life. Perhaps we witness the fruit of not getting to any boundary which is suggested by the presence of a limit because Physics has already debunked the notion that we are all separate and distinct entities and that there is no relation between the matter in this world and the matter that lies around us. Theorists behind the idea of “No Boundary” idea are most likely pleased knowing that there is no limit on thought either because to them our world is part of the next and has been derived from some past where there are no limits, just a constant flux.
Marcus Aurelieus who was a noted Stoic philosopher as well as Emperor, although considered to be a persecutor of early Christians, stated that we are a product of what we think when he said that our lives turn out to be what are thoughts are. “Our lives are what our thoughts make it to be” informs people that we can either make or break success through the thought process. Examples occur on a regular basis as people fall in and out of achievements in their lifetime. It is said that Tom Courtney took the road towards theater rather than film and might have had a better success than Albert Finney in international film even though he has been able to garner some success.
