Time and Consciousness
We reach back in time for unimagined millions of years. Unbelievable as it seems we still carry the genes of that first being which has been passed down from one generation to the next for these eons of time.
We are survivors of more time than we can comprehend. Each of us can be traced back millions of years in time. Our ancestors crawled and walked through such perilous uncertain times, through ignorance, famine, hardship, and eons of troubles. When we look at ourselves we see the work of millions of years, untold human misery, and sacrifice that have made us what we are today. Each time the handoff of the genetic code was made, our bodies blended with the others, right on up till our parents passed on the genetic code to us, and as we pass it on to our own children.

What exactly is consciousness? It is our ability to experience the experience of sensation as it occurs, aware of one’s own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, aware of one’s internal knowledge. It’s difficult to define consciousness because it is precisely what we are. It’s like the old saying, “too close to the trees to see the forest” It’s asking thoughts to define themselves.

When did consciousness arrive in these miraculous human beings? And why did it happen? What led to self awareness? When we look around us we can see that other forms of live do not process this ability. Why are we the exception? Is there a biological reason? Are we lifted up to awareness only to retire at the end of our cycle, now and forever? It’s a question intelligent people have asked since the beginning of self awareness. These questions take us into all kinds of quagmires which can foster erratic behavior. Some say we are a favored species selected by the gods to become as we imagine them.

Consciousness seems to contain two streams. One stream contains voluntary mental productions, thoughts, and images that jump into our heads and sense impressions. The other reflects or evaluates, monitors the first, and places it in perspective. Nothing in our mind ever really goes away. If we have memories that cause us pain or regret now is the time to express it. We need to examine them and learn their nature the best we can.

All feelings must be acknowledged. We can avoid feelings and hurts within us but we can never escape them. We must give awareness to all our feelings, good or bad and learn to accept them. When we acknowledge our feelings, we are proving they are valid and worthy of our attention. We must remember, there are no such things as “bad” feelings. Feelings are just feelings. We must learn to give voice to all feelings and not be afraid to express them.

A very tricky subject to explain. I’m not sure that we are the only living things that possess self-awareness though.

I do like this article and everything Ruby, and I do like your thought process. BUT! There is one major problem! I don’t know where you’ve got all of this information from but I happened to study self awareness and self consciousness about 3-4 months ago for a Biology exam (which I got the results to yesterday) but you’ve got your definitions mixed up.
Self awareness: (according to the book from which I was taught) is defined as the idea that we know that we exist. This includes understanding feelings and emotions. This exists in chimps, elephants, dolphins and majorly, humans.
Self consciousness: on the other hand (according to the book from which I was taught) is defined as when we are too self aware and we let our brains control our actions.
I guess you got the definitions mixed up but they are very negligible in terms of this article.
Nevertheless, a good article with a good thought process and a good concluding paragraph.

Feelings…acknowledged, but sometimes the expression needs to remain private.

More than openly vent feelings, I think we should acknowledge them
and give them acceptance in the spacious tranquility of a meditative spirit.
Many years ago I believed in venting feelings too, but you can easily get into trouble.
Besides, venting feelings and emotions doesn’t work most of the time, unless you want to build them up, or bottle them up in your consciousness for many, many years. This brings trouble, enemies, and possible illnesses.
Respectfully,
Hugo

Thank you everyone. This is something all we humans are interested in. It is all amazing to me. We have come such a long way and who knows how far we have to go. To me there is nothing more interesting,.
Atikin, thank you and I appreciate your comment. I believe you have self consciouness, which I believe means being overly conscious of our actions mixed up with our stream of consciousness which means being aware of ourselves and our thoughts, that we live, and will die.
Hugo, I agree with you. We don’t want to go around venting aloud. We need to acknowledge our feelings to ourlelves and maybe talk to a trusted friend or counceler,

Very well written. Often we can express our feelings boldly but I agree with Daisy sometimes feelings should be expressed private… depending on circumstances. Thank you.

I enjoyed reading your article and I have shared it on my facebook page.
I know how hard it is to try to explain what self-consciousness is. I wrote an article where I tried to explain Common Sense but it didn’t go over very well and nobody has read it in months,
These are touchy subjects and everyone has their own opinion. To me – self awareness is just being aware of the world around me and self-consciousness is knowing where I fit in to my world as it exsist around me. This is all about the “Id” and “Ego” we learned about in Psychology 101.
Thanks for sharing and check out my stories where I show you what I am talking about not just telling you.
Thanks, Lisa

The great thinker Carl Jung made an intriguing statement in his memoir Memories, Dreams, and Reflections, which has stuck with me for many years: the question is not whether there is a God but why we are conscious. Your article reminded me of that. Thanks for the great read.
