Two Essential Perspectives of “Is There Life After Death?”

A look into Dualism v. Physicalism. A philosophical entry into the question of whether there is life after death according to the two different viewpoints. Recreated from the lectures of Shelly Kagan, a professor at Yale University.

The question is, “Is their life after death?” also restated as, “What is the possibility of surviving death?”

To answer a question, you must first deconstruct it. Some of the deconstructions of these questions that can take place include:

  • What am I?
  • What is a person?
  • What defines a person; What is a person made of?
  • How am I built?

These are looks into the metaphysical composition of humans.

Another thing that must be analyzed is what the idea of surviving is.

There is a philosophical objection to this question however. The objection declares the question is misconceived, and based on confusion

The objection essentially relies on what it means to say someone has died, and by the actual definition of death, something along the lines of, the end of life. The question, when using this definition, is then asking, Is their life, after the end of life? A question that cannot seriously be asked, as it is the same as asking, after I run out of gas in my car, or after the book ends, what happens next in the story? It is an obvious question, that cannot truely be take seriously.

The other question was, “Might I survive Death?”

However, through the definition of survive being somewhere along the lines of someone not dying when they could have died, the question literally translates to, “Might I not die, when I die?”

There is a way to respond to the objection thorugh a mire precise, legitimate question that can be raised. But first must be analyzed that people can be die mutiple different ways. However, no matter the cause of death, there are certain patterns that always take place. These patterns include events such as blood no longer circulating, the brain becoming oxygen deprived, cells dying, etc. until there is eventually bodily death. The death of our body.

Now, the questions that can be asked include “Might I still exist after the death of my body?” or “Might I still exist after my bodily death?” There are no obvious contradictions to questions like these as there are with the previous ones.

This question, “Will I survive the death of my body?” can be summarized, into “Will I survive my death,” or “Will I still exist after my death?” as we mean bodily death.

There are still unanswered questions though, such as “What am I,” or “What is a person?” These questions are important as the surviving of a human, after their death, would certainly seem to depend on what they are, or what they are made of.
