Why the Law of Attraction Doesn’t Work

Many people claim that the Law of Attraction doesn’t work or at least it doesn’t work for them. This is part one of a series describing the reason this is true.

There is a lot of talk these days about The Secret, a popular book and video about that touts the benefits of using the Law of Attraction to get the wealth, health and happiness you long for in your life. The ironic thing about this Secret is that it’s not a secret at all. It’s always been out there, but nobody cared to look at it.

If you’ve read “Think and Grow Rich,” or any similar self help book you’ve read about the Secret. By the same token, there’s a chance that if you’ve read any one of these books, you’ve pitched it across the room in frustration muttering to yourself: “This garbage doesn’t work. Why did I waste my time with it?”

I’m here to tell you that it indeed does not work. I’m also here to tell you why.

It doesn’t work because it works perfectly

Now, I have to give you a little background here. And it gets a little paradoxical but try to stay with me here.

If you are healthy, wealthy and full of joy and love and you think the world is a happy place, then the Law of Attraction works perfectly for you.

If you are bitter, depressed, frustrated and see the world as a horrible place, then the Law of Attraction is working just as perfectly for you.

Your world is the way it is because you think it that way. You are the creator of the world you see, you are the one responsible for the way it is. And if you are responsible for the way it is, then you are the one responsible for changing it.

You don’t believe that you are the creator of the world? What, do you think that everyone sees the world in the exact same way as you? Not true I say, and I can prove it.

I am a human male with an abundance of melanin in my skin. Depending on the predominating thoughts of people who look at me, I could either be a black man, a proud black man, or a nigger. Most of the time I look at myself in the mirror, I see myself as an overweight male with cinnamon brown skin and an afro. Which one of these observations are correct?

All of them and none of them. It all depends upon the observer. The Law of Attraction states that our world is created by our thoughts. So, if the Law of Attraction doesn’t work for us, it is because the Law of Attraction is working perfectly for us.

I have been trying to get it to work for me for a few weeks. So far people have asked me why I am smiling more and my wife thinks I am having an affair.

Maybe that’s what I really want?

If I could decide what I really want maybe it would work for me right away.

Philosophically the message has been around for hundreds of years, I need to practice more I guess.

This is perfect pseudoscience. It works whether it works or not. If the magic doesn’t work for you, then you just aren’t doing the magic right. You aren’t meditating hard enough, visualizing clearly enough, you aren’t patient enough. Come to my extraordinarily expensive seminar and I’ll teach you how to do it right.

You are right that the Secret is nothing new. It’s tough old mutton being sold as lamb.

I completely agree with you Susan,

The law of attraction is based on new age suedo-science and horrible misinterpretations of basic quantum mechanics theories experiments, such as the double slit experiment. (the experiment mentioned as ‘proof’ in the movie “The Secret”) Please look this experiment up and come to your own conclusion. Yes using a vision board will help keep your subconscious mind focused on your goals, which may ultimately lead to you solving them but its not magic. Staying positive helps your immune system, your motivation, as well as your interactions with other people, but again NOT magic.

My difficulty with this is that I started off believing it worked, despite no evidence that it did, but 100% of all my desires did not happen. So, my life’s experience seems to be that, even when you desire something strongly and so something about it, even when you are positive, generous and loving, this doesn’t mean one bit you will get the same back.

I’ve read countless books – the Secret, Ask and It Shall be Given, Cosmic Ordering – and practiced all of their recommended techniques with the deep belief they would happen. None of them have. I’ve been doing this for over 10 years and not one desire has come true.

Life has taught me this is just a sales gimmick and I was sucker enough to buy into it. Well, never again!

It all comes down to what you believe. When you believe something you know it and do not assume or doubt it will not happen. When you think about it, it does work in good or bad situations. If I want a new job one will not fall out of the sky you have to act in some type of way and that means not negative but knowing an opportunity will present it’s self. When we think about one bad situation trust more come your way the longer you think about it and if that is your dominating thought it happens extremely fast. I seen it happen. Things can change very quickly but when we are not happy we don’t see that the law of attraction is working we only think that it is working when things are going good, and that’s the problem. When you are happy your thoughts are positive so we are not dwelling on the negative and more good things happen and you think your life is just grand but if you say this is too good to be true you have now opened the door for negative thoughts to come in. However when you are sad you get more that makes you sad things just happen one after another. I think our biggest problem in life is what we believe. People say they believe in Jesus but he too also said ask and you shall receive and if you believe and do not doubt in your heart you will have what you say. So it is the same principles whether you believe in the bible or not. I believe but you may not. So the key is you have to believe. Usually when people say it does not work they try it for a week or two and if nothing happens then yep it did not work. What if you wanted one million dollars unless you do something or put yourself in a position to receive how will it happen. YOu have to allow things and opportunities to come to you. Think about it. You speak what you want and it manifest but you must believe, we all believe in something but is it helping us.

I am not sure whether it works or not for real but I must say that it seems like everyone who talks about this Law of Attraction stuff is trying to SELL something.

    Why is that?

    Here’s my 2 cents ..

The Law of Attraction specifies that you cannot attract what’s beyond your immediate reach. You CAN have everything you want but you must step through it. Some people, myself included have tried to use the LOA by saying something like “I want to make $1 million this year” The problem is that when they made that order they were only making $30,000/year so as hard as they make themselves believe it, the mill does not manifest itself. The subconscious just does not have enough faith. However, if one thinks: What kind of person makes a million dollars? As we describe this person, believable thoughts start coming into being. “I have those traits” then these thoughts start “attracting” other thoughts: “With these traits, I can do these actions …”. Those actions start “attracting” other thoughts which then “attract” other actions which then start “attracting” the right people which then start “attracting” the right circumstances which end in a $1 million and more. How long does this process take? Answer the question as to why do you want to make $1 mill. which will “attract” all the reasons why you want it further “attracting” reasons you will have which will make your subsubconsious “truly believe” making this process move very quickly. In our microwave society, we want everything right now without doing anything for it. That in it of itself is proof that the LOA works because if you sit around waiting for your mill then all you have is a wish and wishes will “attract” only more wishes but never any substance of anything. When these wishes do not manifest themselves then the LOA goes to work attracting reasons for doubt.

I am new to the law of attraction, recently found out about it. started to put it into action and things have already changed. The thing with it is that you have to get out there and want it. Picture what it is that you want and act upon it. it wont just happen if you sit there and hope for it to happen. it’s all about the mindset. and i havent personnally bought anything to find out about it. everything you need to know is free on the internet. obviously there will be people trying to make money out of it, and they probably will. which is probably proof in itself. An example i know many negative people and bad things always happen to them, i was one myself, still working to get out of it. but i know that when you think positively things will change. havent you ever noticed that negative people always seem to attract each other……… and positive people also. the old saying says it. birds of a feather flock together.
    Just my little point.
Oh and go to my website and buy my books and cd’s………. JOKE
    Peace

hahaha!!dat last one was funny!! yea im new to the LOA discovered it last year! i love it! and yes just because i say ilove it doesn’t mean i have had happy days and happy situtions lots of money etc. etc. ever since i heard of the LOA, but i am much happier now sometimes it can be used as therapy when you are feeling down. I do start feeling happier and happier people happier situations are more in my life now..hmm..makes you think..i do have goals and i make them believable for me and just see myself happy when achieve them i believe i will achieve them step by step in the meanwhile i just keep myself happy and positive!! how else would you want to be in the process of achieving your goals? it’s hard enough already.something very important to keep in mind for the process is faith and patience!!! but also live in the present happy that’s part of your life too!! always make it a good one!! =D!!!!!!

Ounce I was shown this dvd by a doctor then my brother got into it and watched it, personally i have found it not to be true and my brother got over it. The secret was a flop i don’t hear any one talk about it anymore. I really don’t think a traffic jam is one persons fault, they attracted that to them, out of all those other people in that same traffic same.. nonsense and just to cover Im not being negative cause that usually lands it back with that excuse.

I’ve been trying this for 12 years and it’s never worked. I started off believing it did work and my experience changed my mind. It’s just a myth being entertained by those wishing to sell books on it and make money out of us.

I don’ think there’s a book or course out there I haven’t tried over the years re The law of Attraction, all to no avail. I am poorer but wiser. I thought it must be true or why do people believe in it? I’ve come to realise that most people who try it either get nowhere and give up or go into the Law of Attraction industry and make their millions there. It only works for those who pass it on. In other words it is like a chain letter.

    The Law of Attraction:

In the words of Jesus -

    Mark 11:24
Therefore I say unto you, Whatsoever things ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

That is the law of attraction in a nut shell.
    Step 1. Desire.
    Step 2. Ask
    Step 3. Believe
    Step 4. Receive.

The Law of Attraction is not a new age doctrine or teaching, it a biblical doctrine that was taught be Jesus himself. Not Buddha or any other eastern type of philosophical teaching, but by Jesus.

@Susan you sound like an atheist.
@Johnathan you gave up to soon. 10 yrs 20, 40 Never give up your vision. Once you do then its gone. Here a verse from the bible that says the same thing.

    Proverbs 29:18
Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

When you said no more, I don’t believe, you said, ” I don’t want this God.” Guess what you probably still don’t have it.

There are HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of verses in the bible that teach the law of attraction. Study to prove thyself acceptable unto GOD.

With all peace and love in God, I hope you have a blessed life.
