Adele Has The Power – in Her Voice and The Charts!
She’s only 23 and a newcomer but Adele and her team have been voted top of the 100 Music Power List. She’s on top – Simon Cowell is down at number three.
Adele has a special voice and a special talent. Her second album 21 has topped the US album charts 7 times and been been No 1 in the UK charts for 15 of the last 17 weeks.
Music Power 100 is a list of the most influential people creating, promoting, managing, and making money from music. Making it to the top is a team effort from the new star and Adele’s team includes her manager Jonathan Dickens, publisher Paul Connolly and radio plugger Brad Hunner.
Best of all Adele has left Simon Cowell well behind, struggling along at Number 3. He doesn’t like that!
These may be difficult times for the music industry but Adele has sold 6 million copies for her independent record label XL.
Adele has burst through on pure talent. There’s no gimmick, no sex sell and no fake Celeb promotion, Cheryl Cole style. This is all about the music, the personality and above all that big, beautiful voice.
Adele has achieved her success, if not the hard way – then certainly the no favours way. She does not come from a privileged background, James Blunt style. There were no family insiders, no private school contacts to smooth the way. Her mother was a single parent born in North London and Adele graduated from the Brit School of Performing Arts.
Originally she wanted to be on the A&R side of the business but after she recorded a 3 song demo a friend put it on MySpace. It took off, she found her manager, and she’s been climbing ever since.
Her US career took off after a smash hit performance on Saturday Night Live - when Sarah Palin also made an appearance. Sarah went to Adele’s dressing room to congratulate her but there was no chemistry and the singer threatened to wear an Obama badge for her performance. Her manager said No!
Adele studies image keenly but does not take it too seriously. Speaking about her follow Brits she describes Amy Winehouse as hard core, Duffy as soft and sexy – and says she’s just mouthy.
By that she means she tells it like it is – but when she opens her mouth to sing it’s all about power, feeling and rich emotion. All power to the Number 1 on the power chart!
