“Bonnie and Clyde” Arizona Inmates Captured While Dozing at Campground

Two outstanding escaped inmates from an Arizona medium-security prison have been captured after three weeks on the run.

John McCluskey and his fiancee Casslyn Mae Welch, the last outstanding inmates who escaped from an Arizona prison, were arrested at a campground near two national forests on Friday.

Welch allegedly aided convicted murderer McCluskey and two other inmates escape from the prison on July 30. They used cutting tools thrown over a wire fence to cut a hole into an outer perimeter fence and escape through the hole. The two fugitives are also suspected of murdering a New Mexico couple and stealing their car.

The two were caught by a heavily-armed SWAT team on Friday at an unnamed Arizona campground. They were caught sleeping at the campsite. Welch defended the snoozing McCluskey from the SWAT team, but both were later handcuffed and taken into custody without a single shot fired. The two were presumed to be armed and extremely dangerous.

The fugitives had weaponry concealed inside the tent and sleeping bags, and Welch allegedly brandished a handgun at officers but surrendered because they were outnumbered.

The couple were referred to in the media as “Bonnie and Clyde” due to their escape, manhunt, and eventual takedown.
