BRIC Nations Benefit U.S.
How Brazil, Russia, India, and China have benefited the U.S.
In recent years the rise of Brazil, Russia, India, and China has certainly aided the United States both politically and economically. In fact the rise of these nations is also necessary for the US to remain a world power. Two important terms in todays debate are on balance and has had. This means we should consider all points brought up and look only at events that have or are happening now. For all these reasons my partner and I support the resolution that on balance the rise of Brazil, Russia, India, and China has had a positive impact on the United States.
Our first contention is that Brazil supports the US politically and economically. VOAnews.com reports in December 2008 that Brazil is the word’s largest ethanol producer and signed the Memorandum of Understanding which advances the study of biofuels bilaterally. Clearly Brazil is searching for energy sources that will better our environment and release our dependence on oil. Also Brazil assists the US economically. Daniel Budny of the Brazil Institute claimed in Jan. 2007 that “The United States is Brazil’s biggest partner in terms of trade, investment, science, and technology.” Since we trade so much with Brazil its growth will lead to more trade for the US and strengthen our economy in this current recession.
Russia also benefits the US politically and economically. Again trade and business relations with Russia allows the United States to expand its market. Marshall J. Goldman of Harvard in May 2008 explains “Russian firms are likely to feel pressure to conform to international standards. This suggests that US policy should be to encourage Russian companies to invest in the US.” Therefore Russia could supplement goods and services to the US and encourage competition in US markets, which leads to economic diversity. Politically, Russia is cooperating to prevent terrorism. Nina Hachigian of the Washington Quarterly reports that Russia is the co-founder with the US of the Global Initiative to combat Nuclear Terrorism. This consists of 50 countries, many of whom joined because Russia joined.” Clearly, the rise of Russia can lead to a decrease in nuclear weapons around the world and lead to more effective diplomacy on the part of the United States.
Furthermore, the rise of India has positively impacted the US politically and economically. First India is becoming a growing market for US products. Vinay Rai, a bestselling author, explains that India is emerging as a vital partner to the U.S. In creating a stronger world economy. India honors the values of individual enterprises and free markets and with its ever increasing growth of its young population, American company could sell more of their products to them and acquire revenues to help them out in these difficult economic times. Moreover, India is becoming an emerging leader in Asia that reflects American foreign interest. For example, Xexia Dormandy of Harvard states that, “Additionally, New Delhi has invested about $750 million in building infrastructure and training security forces in Afghanistan and responded immediately to the Asia tsunami in Dec. 2004.” Moreover, India has captured Al Queada operatives that were involved in the 9/11 attacks on the United States. India’s rise in power is beneficial to the U.S. Because they have supported our interest and allow our national goals to be more thoroughly fulfilled.
Finally, China has had positive impacts on the U.S. Economically and politically. According to Wang Yiwei of the Harvard International Review, “Today the trade deficit with China is $200 billion. China holds over $1 trillion in foreign exchange reserves and $350 billion in U.S. Bonds. Together, the Chinese and U.S. Economies account for half of global economic growth. Thus, a fantastic situation has arisen. China’s rise is actually supporting U.S. Hegemony” Through this, the U.S. is able to expand its financial opportunities and allow for more innovation, which definitely has positive impacts. Moreover, China is cooperating to prevent Nuclear terrorism. The Washington Quarterly reports that China has signed bilateral agreements with the United States such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Chemical Weapons Convention, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and the Nuclear suppliers group. With China’s rising power, these acts can be better enforced and promote more peaceful relationship between different countries.
Hence, the rise of Brazil, Russia, India, and China has helped the United States both politically and economically. These large benefits outweigh the small disadvantages. Therefore, my partner and I urge you to choose the negative ballot. Thank You.
