Constable of the world? Or not?

An old cartoon inspired me to this…

Recently as I looked on an SAT preparation test book, I saw a really old cartoon (1930s), depicting the USA as a constable, with several other countries (Britain, France, Empire of Japan) holding guns and staring at him.

But now, the USA is literally criticizing everyone. China for human rights, Russia for its planes going too far, etc. Is this being a constable, or is this an attempt to bring other countries down? Let’s take a look at this, with China as an example.

I’ve lived in China. Since 1949, it’s been rebuilding from more than a hundred years of war. It’s literally the factory of the world with the number of products manufactured there. It’s also the most populated country and the 3rd largest country in the world. Recently, Bush criticized China of having high emission rates. But if you take a look at other countries, you’ll find that the USA’s emission rates are even higher and still skyrocketing. Is this being a constable?

Tibet is currently a large problem. Human rights groups are yelling around the world. The USA is included. But take a closer look at videos filmed by the people that witnessed the mutiny. The Tibetans were burning everything up. Once, an ambulance attempted to rescue several victims of their arsony, but was attacked by the Tibetans with rocks. The windows were smashed, and the drivers had to fight their way out. Is this called human rights? Some may say that Tibet was forcibly taken, but look at Hawaii. How was it taken? By killing the royal family there, of course, and raiding the palace.

Again, let’s take a look at animal rights in China. You’re sure to find several saying, “Eating dogs is so cruel!” Now take a look at Chinese literature. Cattle, in the past, were illegal to kill, since they helped in the fields. I don’t see anybody saying, “Beef should be made illegal to eat!”, yet people are still whining about dog eaters. Again, is this being a constable?

Finally, let’s take a look at Taiwan, Macau and Honk Kong. They were returned to China in the late 20th century by their captors: Japan, Portugal and Britain. Some people still wanted to stay, however, and this caused a slightly different human rights scandal. But let’s take a final closer look: This is still Chinese land. Would it be fair to have America given to Britain, since the earliest Americans were British settlers?

For me, I think it’s time for the USA to retire from its position of “constable”. The world is not as ungoverned and lawless as it seems; India and other countries are no longer ruled by cannibals and fanatics.
