Cooperation Among The Nations

Cooperation among the nations is one of President Obama’s main goals. He believes Americans have matured enough to understand that the old way of denouncing other countries and grandstanding does not succeed. And that America’s success depends on working with others.

Is it true that it’s not worth while taking the United nations seriously? When we say that, we should remember they are the only organization in the world to which all countries belong, and as that they do have considerable legitimacy. And that means power. Over the last twenty years they have authorized more than a dozen peace keeping missions, imposed sanctions or arms embargo’s on ten states, and created several war crime tribunals to prosecute the ones responsible for genocide crimes against humanity.

Many countries have come to believe that America shows little interest in the world. It’s an easy reason to reject even modest U. S.requests. When Nicolas Sarkozy was elected president of France in 2007, Condoleezza Rice asked him what she could do to help him, Sarkozy replied, Improve your image to the world.

There is the idea going around today that no one will ever cooperate with America. China and Russia have their own interest and it’s seems foolish to think that we have any common ground with them. But Obama is telling the world the U.S. is willing to cooperate, to rejoin international institutions, to adhere to treaties but in return other countries will have to solve some of the worlds common problems.

All countries do have their own interests which are sometimes in conflict , but they often have some common goals, the task is to build on those areas of agreement, and create a stable world. That’s why we have treaties on everything from trade to taxation obeyed by most nations because it’s in their own best interests.

Obama’s approach is already reaping results. Russia and China agreed to a toughening of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. And Russia gave notice that it may support tougher sanctions on Iran. Obama’s administration’s decision to nurture a relationship with both countries is showing results. For years it’s been thought a mistake for American politicians to be seen as seeking international cooperation but Obama is gambling on America being mature enough to understand that toughness and stupidity is not for foreign policy and that grandstanding just won’t succeed.

Might work. The U.S. could do a little better paying off its bills. We are the largest debtor to the U.N.

Great article! I think that the biggest difficulty with taking the open-mindedness of Obama’s foreign policy seriously is the valid doubt that his promises will be approved by Congress, especially the Senate. To me this makes Copenhagen’s outcome an important microcosm of broader patterns; a test tube of what we can expect. Thanks for the read!

American foreign policy must be built on cooperation with other nations. This idea that we can go it alone is insane. How go it alone became our foreign policy is beyond me. You have written a very clear sighted article on how America should approach the world. And Obama knows this in his gut. I’m rooting for him, too. Some of his critics are praying for him to fail.

I think Obama is doing a great job trying to cooperate with most of the countries in the world. But there are nations that harbor many people who think like Al Qaeda. And if they want to be friendly it would only be to infiltrate our great nation with their terrorists. Like
the terrorist who hopped aboard a jet liner in Amsterdam and tried to blow up the plane over Detroit just today. Let’s not get too friendly with the nations that breed Terrorists as if they were an acceptable life form.

This is my opinion too. I think you have a great President. Cooperation is essential to ensure peace in the world. I really appreciated the photo and words of French President.
Great post Ruby, as usual. Thank you so much.

Maybe. But IMO if leaders of nations have to rely on speeches to achieve results, chances that those results will be achieved are slim at best. (See Copenhagen for an example of what I am talking about) Generally speaking, leaders give speeches (and take credit for on their and their country’s behalf) for what has already been achieved much more quietly.

As history has showed us, America always falls last when it comes to peacekeeping treaties and leagues to unite the nations. Maybe we should just start letting someone else make the decisions, maybe even the people for a change.

The worst part about agreeing with other nations is that we, the United States, always come out of agreements and treaties with the short end of the stick. I agree with Lauren. If W, The People were allowed to make these decisions instead of politicians who have their own agendas, America just might make better decisions.

President’s Obama’s policy of Co-operation is actually a radical departure from the previous regimes and of course in the context of the economic recession from which his country is actually recovering from.Gone are the days when US was considered the only super power in the American continents. There are emerging superpowers like Brazil etc in South America that actually tilted her balance in clinching the bid for 2016 Olympics in her favour, beating the rivals like Spain, Japan and US etc.Hence, President Obama had no other go but to take a policy decision in tune with the realities. It is pleasing to note that President Obama’s policy has begun to click and paying dividends. Thanks for sharing a thought provoking article.

I like Obama’s approach; gather back some friends that we need and who have felt alienated over the past eight years. I am rooting for him but I haven’t really seen much change, yet. China and Russia are not really putting much heat on Iran who continue to harbor terrorists and hate-speak, every day. Iran buys way too much from Russia for Russia to seriously punish them…China plays games with Iran and N. Korea and will not really tell them to CUT OUT their crazy actions, or else. But, Rome wasn’t conquered in one day, so I hope. Hey, let’s get defensive, build a strong defense (not offense), leave all those countries to fend for themselves and put our own people back to work. Develop our own energy, for us!…we have everything we need here, (including food and techology) if we choose to use it – let’s take care of our own people.

I certainly welcome Obamas approach – its not easy and the international bodies like the UN are difficult to work with, but it has to be worth perservering with
