Democracy and The Case of Pakistan
Democracy and the case of Pakistan.
According to Abraham Lincoln, democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people.
This definition seems unrealistic and impractical for Pakistan It does not make sense any way. The people misuse the democracy tool. A society has to be mature and literate to make their choices and decisions without ht e dictation of any religious imposition. The literacy rate of Pakistan is below average, we cannot afford democracy. We have and are creating blunders, since the core/ mass population is uneducated and illiterate.
Subcontinent people are historically corrupt and have misused power for their personal pleasures. Democracy without a transparent system seems to be day dreaming. If we can have democracy in its true essence, it would be at the cost of religious values, identity and culture. Pakistan can never be a true democratic state.
Hazrat Umar (R.A) was a dictator, He dictated as prescribed by Islamic Shariah. State was efficient, productive and stable not because it was working on the decisions of the people, but because it was following the real principles of Islam.
There is no doubt that democracy has a brighter side too. The world has come closer with economic and social ties replacing hatred. At the same time this has led us to homogenous sort of system. All the countries with their religion at one platform – aside.
In my view, majority % of the population of Islamic Republic of Pakistan won’t have a problem if we remove the word Islamic from the official name, but using the name just for the sake of showing we are Islamic and not implementing that setup, is not morally and ethically correct. There’s nothing like Ayub Khan’s ‘Democracy with discipline’. Either democracy ruins the culture with the passage of time as is the case of Pakistan or if we limit people’s demands with discipline; we are limiting the true essence of democracy.
