Freedom of Speech? Freedom From Media

Is the media destroying our First Amendment right to say what we please?

Man-cow is getting the raw end of the deal here.  They’re saying he doesn’t have the right to change his opinion on water-boarding.  Why not?  He based his opinions on personal experiences that changed.  But we’re all supposed to support Senator Kerry who based his opinion on popularity polls?  That is not right.  That is not American.

Am I offended by the media’s treatment of Man-cow over the past few days?  Yes, I am.  Am I running to the government and saying they need to censor all the news because it hurts my feelings?  No!  I’m doing exactly what I want to do – I’m exercising my right to free speech.  Maybe if a few more people exercised their right of free speech; instead of screaming about how we need to censor more people to keep them from being offended… well, maybe we’d have a few more ideas and a few less problems then.

And that seems to be one of the biggest problems now.  We’re so afraid to offend someone that we won’t come right out and say our true ideas.  It’s a rule of politics (I may not be good in the ring, but I did study the rules) that when the right is scared they run further to the right, and when the left is scared they run to the middle.  Why?  The money sits in the conservative sections of the groups.  And now the Republicans are running further to the right, but the Democrats are able to dive clear into the left with a filibuster proof Senate and a controlling majority in the House.  This is dangerous.  For all the partisan politics that they are – America is nothing but a group of centrists and moderates.  Yes, there are a few at each end of the spectrum, but mostly America is a group of centrists and moderates.  Why can’t we put those people in office?  The ones who understand that they are not always going to win, but on the big issues will be able to provide solutions that can accommodate almost everyone.

Maybe if a few more people were allowed to speak up uncensored we might be able to make sense of a few more ideas.

Interesting, and good approach. I have always been annoyed by politicians unwillingness to say, “wow, you’re right, I never though about it that way”

It would make the issues so much more obvious.
Debates slightly annoy me because they are about one side beating each-other instead of getting to the truth. Politicians should play Devil’s advocate more.
