Getting Rid of Winter Fat
If you are like me, then the winter months ultimately mean extra pounds to your frame. Now that I am older, the days of working out at the gym have ceased. Throughout the winter I am a sedentary person and by this time of the year my lack of activity really starts to show.

Oh blessed springtime, thank you for arriving and especially for the balmy 75 degrees that today has brought. The smells and warm temperatures have awakened a dormant giant. Not unlike a bear that goes into hibernation over the winter months, I too put on my winter’s fat. I am not proud of it, but it is true. Aside from using the snow blower or shoveling off our front steps, I remain a sedentary soul during our long winter months. However, today has brought out the athlete me. I am working my foolish self into a hospital bed or a hot bath. I’ll take the bath….thank you very much.
As many know, including LewSethics I live in a snow belt. We have had snow on the ground from November until the beginning of April this year and it does take a toll on both your mental state and your physical appearance. Today marks the turning point. With a forecast of temperatures in the mid to high 70s it has become apparent the time has arrived to move my body parts once again. I have rusted like the Tin Man and need an oilcan squirted into my moving parts. The old bones creek and crack with each bend. I can also attest to the statement that muscle turns to fat when not used and at one point in time I must have had a ton of muscle. Today marks the season of change both physically and literally.

Before venturing out to the yard for my long awaited chores, there was one pressing duty that needed to be addressed. In the United States, April 15th marks the deadline for filing your state and federal income taxes. The day found me buried in a pile of boxes and stacks of receipts as expenses, property taxes and income statements were sorted…all in anticipation of meeting the accountant the following day. My reward for doing this loathsome task would be awaiting me outdoors. With paperwork finished my path took me down to the shed to find my sleeping tiller. The last time this journey was made happened over 5 months ago. “Would it start?” I wondered, after filling the gas tank and pulling the rip chord. With the rhythmic beat of a drum pattern, the tiller fired up with just a few yanks. Oh, sweet music engulfed the the warm spring air with the aura of things to come. This day brought heaven on earth as the trumpets blew in the breeze of the changing season.

The garden was tilled and as in past years, extended a foot on one side and a foot on the other. The leaves used for mulch were raked up and carted away and 54 seedlings of tomatoes, cucumbers and various lettuce plants were re-potted. Windows were opened as the house was allowed to breathe the freshness blowing in. I am once again in my zone….my element, if you will. This is a beginning of new life for the coming year. My wife looks upon my outside escapades as work, but not I. Now is the time to shed pounds, as my body morphs into a different appearance, while working in perfect harmony with the changing shape and mold of the garden and yard. Today is the day I am whole once again!

Very good. We all gain weight in the winter. I am starting today to eat a half hour before lunch and dinner to eat a special nutrition bar and 16 ounces of water and it makes you eat less of your mill because you are too full.

Pencil pushing will not shift the pounds Dennis, but the work in the garden will – now that is a worthwhile endeavour

I don’t have much fat to get rid of, but I’ve started to drop my wintry cobwebs. Yes, spring’s a wonderful season. I love having my dinner when there’s still daylight. God post. Thanks for sharing.
